Marijuana Resperatory Effects
UpdatedI was wondering if anybody knows long term resperatory effects of marijuana. I get it prescribed legally, but want to know if it has harmful effects on my lungs like how cigarettes would. Any help would be appreciated!

Yep! That is one of the few long-term effects it has on the body with occasional usage, you are, after all, inhaling the smoke just like if you were smoking cigarettes, so you are putting carbon particles and other toxins into your lungs.
Actually many people believe it is just as bad a smoking cigarrettes. There have been recent studies that say that the smoke inhaled during the smoking of marijuana is negligible. It is no worse than breathing smoggy air. You can look at some of the journals and university studies to find the exact ones conducted. I hope this helps with what you are looking for.
Smoggy polluted air is actually very damaging, not neglible at all. It puts toxins and carbon particles into your lungs just as much as smoking does, and causes just as many adverse health effects.
Hi everyone, thanks for the answers so far. Could you guys point me in the direction of a few articles outlining what you have stated above (particluarly the statement 'There have been recent studies that say that the smoke inhaled during the smoking of marijuana is negligible')? Thank you very much.
If you are taking this drug legally you should call them and ask for a print out of the side affects. They used to say, one joint equals a pack of cigarettes. None of it is good for the lungs.
Lola is correct, all smoking is bad for the lungs. This person trying to say it is neglible is kidding themselves. You inhale the smoke, you inhale stuff that is bad and harmful to your lings, doesn't matter what it is.
As to studies, well mostly what you will find will be the government anti-drug propaganda which will be the worst of the worst, and will not provide you with very honest information.
The reason I work at this site, is because I can answer these types of questions for people. this site does not promote the use of illegal drugs, but I would not be working here, and earning my monthly paycheck if the site owner did not know I could provide accurate and honest information.
If I am not familiar with something and cannot research an answer, I will say that in my post and just not provide an answer.
If you browse the other posts on here, you will see several where the question was about a foreign drug or something that I just could not find the information on, so I do not answer if I do not know what I am talking about.

How does marijuana affect the lungs?
Scientists believe that marijuana can be especially harmful to the lungs because users often inhale the unfiltered smoke deeply and hold it in their lungs as long as possible. Therefore, the smoke is in contact with lung tissues for long periods of time, which irritates the lungs and damages the way they work. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same ingredients in tobacco smoke that can cause emphysema and cancer. In addition, many marijuana users also smoke cigarettes; the combined effects of smoking these two substances creates an increased health risk.

The Effects of Marijuana on the Lungs
Researchers at the UCLA Pulmonary Research Laboratory studied the effects of marijuana smoking in 75 young men. The men consumed an average of five marijuana cigarettes a day for two months. The study showed that the lung damage caused by four marijuana cigarettes were equal to the damage caused by 112 tobacco cigarettes.

The study also found that marijuana smoke and that of tobacco affected the lungs in different ways. Tobacco smoke predominantly caused degeneration of the peripheral airways and alveolated regions of the lung, while marijuana smoke affected mainly the large pathways. Because these two drugs affect different parts of the pulmonary system, their damaging effects can be additive.

Effects of Marijuana on the Lungs
Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers have. These individuals may have daily cough and phlegm, symptoms of chronic bronchitis, and more frequent chest colds. Continuing to smoke marijuana can lead to abnormal functioning of lung tissue injured or destroyed by marijuana smoke.
Regardless of the THC content, the amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are three to five times greater than among tobacco smokers. This may be due to marijuana users inhaling more deeply and holding the smoke in the lungs.
I'm sure that the reasons you are prescribed marijuana outweigh the respiratory risks. However, just to put in a better perspective.... The comparison of smoking cannabis to cigarettes is an unreasonable argument. Cigarettes have thousands of carcinogens and chemicals added to them, not to mention TAR as a main ingredient. The response below with quote "a joint a day equals a pack of cigarettes a day" is completely wrong. Just incorrect. All of that thinking comes from propaganda on marijuana. The reason it even became illegal is because of the lack of research done in the 1940's. I suggest you personally research this. I also recommend you find the CNN medical documentary Cannabis, why I changed my mind.. By Sanjay Gupta. There are alternative ways to consume marijuana for medical purposes. One last thing, marijuanas effect on the mind can be lowered by growing strands with limited THC, but still receiving the amazing health benefits.
P.s I think the odds of your lungs either developing infection, getting cancer are seriously slim if you started with good lung health. The body is just amazing.
