From what I was able to gather:

Vicodine/Hydrocodone (related to codeine) is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain. Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of hydrocodone.Together, acetaminophen and hydrocodone are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain.

Codeine is a narcotic pain reliever (analgesic). Its precise mechanism of pain relief is not clearly understood. Codeine is frequently combined with Tylenol or aspirin for more effective pain relief.

Many people who have had both medications state that it's really a personal preference when it comes to choosing between the two; medications can affect everyone differently, some people get great results from taking, but there are others that it doesn't work for. The only way to find out is to actually try them both. I will note that in many reviews I've come across, the majority of people prefer hydrocodone (although I'm assuming this is because it is more addictive).
