M Ckrodt Spec Hydrocodone Apap

I have a prescription for HYDROCODONE APAP 5-500 TABLMCK that has a discard date of 2010. Are these still safe to use? If not, what is recommended method of disposal?

They don't get dangerous past the expiration date, but they do lose effectiveness, so they are most likely worthless by now.

The recommended FDA method of disposal is to mix them with some undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, or used kitty litter and then to place that in a sealed container in the garbage.
