Lyrica Side Effects Of Long Term Use And Teeth Loss
UpdatedI have been on lyrica from the very beginning of release 12-01-05. I have major side effects taking 900mg a day, now having teeth loss. Has anyone else been having this problem? Please help.
Within the past year I have undergone 5 root canals and 1 failed root canal that resulted in extraction. I have also been diagnosed as severely deficient in Vitamin D (18 of 35). This all came about after being on Lyrica a little over 1 year. I am interested in hearing other teeth related stories as we have spent over $8K in the past year trying to save the teeth I have. After 18 years of timely adult check-ups I found these problems all at once!
Lyrica can cause or aggravate dental issues, as will a lot of medications if you are on them long-term.
One of the primary reasons is that it causes dry mouth, your saliva contains natural enzymes, which help to cleanse your mouth and teeth and remove harmful bacteria. So anytime you take a medication that results in dry mouth, then the potential for dental problems arises.

It's also interesting to note that long term anti-epileptic drugs such as Lyrica can be linked to Vitamin D deficiency that I also suffer with. I am currently on 50,000 I.U. weekly, however the numbers have not changed dramatically. I am also increasing exposure to sun daily. Interested in others that are dealing with this deficiency. The leg cramps and extreme depressive episodes have been a huge change in a once vibrant person. I want to get on top of things again, but don't know if I can live without the Lyrica that assists with my Trigeminal neuralgia flares. Tegretol left me zombified.....
Lisa: Thank God I came across your blog about taking Lyrica and how it effected your teeth. I too take excellent care of my teeth. In fact I wore braces in my twenties and had very healthy teeth. Unfortunately, I was put on Lyrica for a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia and stayed on it for approximately one year. Prior to starting Lyrica, I went to my dentist and nothing was out of the ordinary. Eventually I noticed the enamel coming off and then my teeth started to just crush and fall out of my mouth. I too am in the middle of having them fixed and I had 9 (nine) root canals and they want me to get one implant. I have been seeing two dentists that have never seen anything like this before. My cavities and teeth problems are on the teeth that typically do not get diseased. When my endodontist was giving me root canals, he said that when he started drilling, my teeth were like eggshells and blew apart. Every time I go to the dentist, they find more disease or cavities, etc.. So far, I have spent 20K on fixing my teeth and that does not include ALL of the caps that I will need. That will probably be another 15K. I understand what Verwon mentioned about dry mouth, however, I have been on other medications that caused dry mouth, but not the damage that Lyrica has caused. Pfizer can warn you all they want about weight gain (I went from 150 to 225 lbs) and dry mouth, but they never mentioned what to do to protect my teeth IF and only IF it was dry mouth that caused it. While on Lyrica, I kept a bottle of water with me 100 per cent of the time. What are we supposed to do at night, while we are sleeping? We cannot keep our mouths wet all night long. I plan on suing Pfizer for all of my current costs and future costs. Practically everything in my mouth is artificial and again, that is after I paid over 5,000 dollars in Orthodontia while I was in my twenties. Lisa, thank you so much for voicing your situation and making me feel like I am not all alone, or even CRAZY! I even think the dentists think I am crazy or not telling them the truth about how I took care of my teeth. So please keep me updated through e mail and I will do the same if you send me your e mail. I know how terrible it is to go through this horrible ordeal. Be well!
lyrica is making me fat. gained 25 pounds in 8months. anyone else with this problem?
I have been taking Lycria for at least 7 years now - 300mg in morning and 300mg in evening, plus additional medications all for the pain caused by severe disc degeneration from C2 - C6, T1 - T5 and L4 - L6. ALOT OF PAIN!! I still have pain and at times it is unbearable, but overall the medication makes is tolerable. I have now gained an extra 30 pounds and can't figure out how to loose it. Nothing works!! And believe me, I have tried everything!! So, this is making me very depressed and when I get into one of these moods, I could sleep all day. Yes, I too have short term memory lose and know that it's caused by the medication. The part that scares me is if I can't remember if I have taken my meds, I don't want to overdose! I also have had one of my molers pulled because it absessed suddenly. So, please, please, someone help me!! I have to loose this weight because I can't afford to buy new clothes and I have a closet full that I would absolutely love to wear!!!!! Thanks for listening (reading) to me!!
Yes Lyrica has also increased my weight by about 10-12 kgs over 2 yrs, I take 300mg mane and 150mg nocte.
I too would very much like to know how to loss weight, when u can't walk any distance or exercise coz of feet pain and balance. Aussie male 60yrs old.
My jaw teeth just started falling apart after taking Lyrica for about 12 months, so I now have dentures. I also had HORRIFIC memory problems(I thought I was getting early onset Alzheimers or something) Now 18 months of my life is almost a total blank!! My upper body was so swollen and my feet looked like Fred Flintstone, that fat and red!! I couldn't even wear shoes!! The pain was almost unbearable!!! Rapid weight gain. Went from 115 to about 165lbs. My long hair also was falling out by the handful, daily. Then the DEPRESSION-HORRIBLE!! This was like living in a NIGHTMARE!! I looked like a 80 year old, toothless fat, balding woman at the age of 45. If anyone has these things begin to happen to you(if you are lucky enough to still have enough of your mind left to realize it) I say GET OFF OF IT before it does(or makes you do) something EVEN WORSE!!! If you are one of the lucky ones it works for than good for you. I think these doctors are pushing this junk on EVERYONE, and I can not, for the life of me, figure out why.It did absolutely NOTHING for my painful neuropathy. My doctor would not take me off of it EVEN after all of this. I had to do it myself. I really believe if I would have continued taking this I would have no mind left, if I was lucky enough to still be alive!!! It WAS THAT BAD!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I am soooooo sorry for what you are all going through. I have fibromyalgia - and the only thing I finally tried after a year of badgering was Cymbalta - 40 pounds later and thoughts of suicide - I took myself off it and began my quest to heal myself as naturally as possible.
In addition to fibro - I have a rare disorder called Hereditary Angioedema, and for many years was able to effectively treat it with minimal meds - and that is what my goal was with fibro.
It has been about five years, and I am doing fairly well. I have walked/ran two half marathons, work full time, and am going back to school. I spend a lot more time with friends, and usually am able to sleep just 8 hours and get up.
I still struggle, however, I am sooooo much better than when I was on meds. Most all my success has been from lifestyle changes. I have a blog www.fighting-hae-fibro.blogspot.com if you want to check it out.
None of you should have to go through what you are going through. It seems almost like malpractice for a doctor or pharmaceutical company to make a drug that may treat your symptoms today, but destroy your life, hopes and dreams for tomorrow. I love my teeth - I have been blessed with beautiful teeth - and after 37 years, only a couple fillings. I would be suing as well - I am glad you have been able to find a place to post this info so others will know! - I will make sure to tell my doctor and my fibro group as well. It just is not right!!
Good Luck to all of you in your quest for a life without pain.
May God Bless You All!
Has anyone tried weaning off Lyrica?
I too have been on Lyrica for just over a year now. I too am gaining weight and have bleeding gums every time I brush!
It does help me sleep -- I had hip surgery and it was recommended for referral pain!
But it has one wonderful side effect...it stops peri-menapausal Night Sweats. GO figure. At the same time I'm wondering if it is also causing them? Has anyone tried coming off this evil pill? They say it's not addictive -- yet I get headaches and am sullenand moody everytime I try to quit -- plus I can't sleep at night and then the night sweats come in waves...
To all of you with dental problems. I had and contiue to have dental issues. This was a workmans comp case and I hadseceral doctors as well as two dentists write ketters descibibingnwhat the long temr affects high doses of piates will do to your teeth. Needless to say qwcp which is the govermentworkers comp people have DENIED my claim, after all those professionals with nothing to gain except see a women stryggling with my injury ,then to lse akk my teeth which rackd upi a bill in the thousands and I hae no way to pay it. I am represented by a lawyer an ge stated the facte to them ,still they denied my claim. I didnt know at that time LYRIca was also a culprit to the loss of my teeth. We al know that this is just one little site of people suffering the affects, I kow as you all knoe there are probably qoo to 1000 of prople like us. How can we find a lawyer with the backbone to ake om pfiser. I am going to write to the compny themselfs expressing my own concernsjust to see if I might bet a responce. Besides the fact if my spinal cord injury wasnt as bad as it is and I cant ever work again, I couldnt if I miraculusly healed overnight from it. My mind is gone and is going a little more each day and I am just plain stupid. I cant eben get a sentence out ,make a doctors app order a pizza any simpe task, because i cant write or get ny words out. Plus the fact my memory. I hav lost memories of my past as well as short em memory. I contiue to peat myself nd cant remembr to go on green and stop on red. I am embarresed and have hmbodied mysel and tota;;y withdraw. No one understands me nor would they unless they had taken Lyrca. t is so unfair how the markted it and their commercials have changed and they sre trying o cover their asses. I hve spent endless hours searchinf fot someone to help. I am terrified of what is to come nextfrom tnhis drug that hasnt shown up yet, As I stted before numbers are strong and if we fight them together maybe then they will listen,or not. They are huge but taking one life to me is one to many I dont care what kind of help it might give some people. I know I always feared the word alztimers for down the road for myself, but im just 53 and I feel like im allready having symptoms. Anyone with ideas? Just to let you know it took we over 2 hours to writ this but had I spoken it to youI would have made no sense at all. Depressed fat lost confused stupid embarassed and sick in marylad. vicky
I have been on lyrica for a couple of years and have gained heaps of weight. I also find it is very strong ie I feel all confused and demotivated most of the time. I haven't been able to get much done for ages now. I am trying to reduce my dose at the moment but find that other triggers come in to play most of the time such as some weather and stress.

I have lost 4 teeth since I have been on Lyrica. Two of my front teeth fell out within 3 weeks of each other. My dentist could not believe it. He said, "What are you doing?!" I said, "I don't know, they just fell out." Both of my front teeth fell out at the gum line. I had to have 2 root canals & a special post inserted in my root to attach crowns to. This is expensive!!! For the other 2 teeth, I had to have bridges installed. Now, I have more money in my mouth than in my bank acaount!!
Been on Lyrica 1.25 yr. I always previously had healthy teeth and hair. Lyrica has helped immensely with severe Fibromyalgia pain and sleep issues though I have not been able to return to work. Since being on Lyrica I noticed my hair got so dry it is brittle and no matter how much water I drink still fee so thirsty it feels like my mouth is clay and my teeth on the bottom sides to back feel brittle. Lately I had a perm on my very long hair and much of it broke in hunks as high as my ears half as wide as my baby finger and so much of the rest broke I now have a fuzzy layer of short broken hair from my ears up all over. Lately my jaws and gums got very sore with episodes about every half hour of sudden intense pain running in strands up my neck and all around my mouth and up into my left cheek, it flared to unbearable pain for about 7 minutes and then would fire again about half hour later, this Continued about 7 days. The next while the left bottom teeth side to back were so painful I could not chew on that side. The tooth at the very back on the lower left side felt brittle and like it might crumble. One day recently I noticed the whole side on the inside was gone. Not long after the filling popped out while flossing. It felt like it might crumble or just pop out. Now it cracked and had to be removed. The other teeth bottom sides to back feel kind of brittle still. After reading others experiences with dental issues after starting Lyrica, I am considering stopping it. Again, I always had healthy hair and teeth prior to Lyrica so it is likely Lyrica is a major factor in these problems How would one prove Lyrica is the cause? All other factors are the same i.e. eating habits, etc., the medicine is the only change in my life. I also take T3 with codeine since my accident in 2007.
Take care.
I have been taking it since it became available for fibromyalgia, it has caused major dental issues. 2 weeks ago I had all my top teeth pulled and now have a denture. One bottom tooth had to be removed as well. It's appears the decay somehow starts inside the teeth and then they break off at the gum line.
I have been taking Lyrica since it was out in the U.S.A. and because of a reduction in pain, stopped it for about 2 years. My fibromyalgia flared up and I'm taking 300mg/day now + gabapentin 1800mg/day. I wear a night guard for my teeth as I grind them. So far, none of the problems mentioned in your posts. I found a Korean acupuncturist who is also an oriental M.D. and found that 1) my sleep improved immediately - about 2 treatments (got off of Ambien) and 2) my pain was reduced. He also gave me herbs for "energy". I was seeing him 1x/wk for about 1.5 hours for about 4 months before I saw improvements in pain and energy levels. My cognition (memory and thinking processes) seem to be affected. Anyone have any data on Lyrica and Alzheimers?
I am in shock what Lyrica has done to you with your teeth. I've been on Lyrica for about 5months now at 225mg. I am wondering what dosage you were on? Could the dentist see if my teeth will fall out or any of those issues you had? Are you on another medication that helps with fibromyalgia? I worried because Lyrica does help. Thanks
I recently came across a website called Fibromyalgia Treatment Group. I get emails from them and have found their newsletters informative. They offer alternative medicine which I haven't tried yet. I'm slowly trying to get off Lyrica, over the next 3-4 months if it all works out and then will try the alternative. Contact them and see what you find out.
I have Tri-Geminal neuralgia and was prescribed Lyrica, it worked well to lessen my pain but within a short period of time (less than 1 yr) my teeth started to abandon ship. I went to complete an extraction and the techs there were alarmed as they showed me an X-ray they had taken one year before. It showed that I had all my teeth with a number of filings but, still there. The picture they took that day showed that I had eleven teeth left and they were going to extract two. The reason for the extraction was that they had been breaking or coming terribly loose. My regular dentist had removed the others but did not fill comfortable removing these teeth. He had told me the loss of the teeth was due to one, or a combination of the meds I was taking. I now have partials. I had stopped taking Lyrica because the mental effects it caused me. As soon as I stopped taking it the remaining teeth are fine.

I, too, take Lyrica for trigeminal neuralgia after trying everything else. It is a lifesaver!

I have been taking Lyrics for a little over a year and gained 30 pounds!I also lost 4 teeth. My teeth just came out by themselves. I am weaning myself off of it slowly.
I have started having issues with my teeth since I started taking Lyrica or Gabapentin.root canal specialist informed me the reason I started having problems is due to these meds.
Trigeminal neuralgia sounds very serious so let me caveat by saying you should follow your doctor's advice to the letter. here's my take as a former Lyrica user: this is an extremely damaging and strong drug which has a shocking side-effect profile. when I tried to go off it I had all sorts of night trauma, mental haze and other issues. I wanted off for the urinary complications but, after weening off, I'm glad I'm done with it due to harm I think it was doing vs. benefit. ask your doc about homeopathic alternatives that could help your situation. keep us posted!
Yes!!! I started taking Lyrica around 2015. I had recently had braces on and my teeth were perfect. As soon as I started taking Lyrica (75 mg 3 x daily) my teeth were rotting out at an impressive rate. I have had all but 5 teeth surgically removed now. It's so humiliating but Lyrica has been the only thing that has helped my Trigeminal Neuralgia.

I am in same boat. My teeth are breaking down

Hello, I have been on Lyrica and Tramadol for the last 11 or 12 years after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Prior to taking these 2 medications, my teeth were in good condition, and trips to dentists were few and far between. I had only 1 filling and dentists commented on the good condition of my teeth. These days I have big cavities, cracked teeth with bits'n'pieces missing throughout. I'm now too embarrassed to go to the dentist, and the last few times have resulted in teeth being extracted, and replaced with massive bills to pay! I have to admit that lyrica has a big effect on pain levels, and tramadol still keeps my motor running, but I do wish now that I had never begun taking them, and instead learnt to manage my pain other ways. Now I live with the following; my memory is trashed, I'm about as social as a rock, I don't sleep when supposed to, I fall asleep at inappropriate times, I can't concentrate on work, I have dozens of unfinished jobs everywhere, I'm scared of dentists, I'm depressed daily, I'm sore all over, I'm grumpy, I'm addicted to poison, and I will soon be broke... Teeth or no teeth I'm not half the person now that I was prior to trusting the system by taking it's medications/poisons... from which of my current ailments would I suffer if I had never bothered chasing a diagnosis and treatment for Fibromyalgia??
