I am the patient of a pain management physician because there is nothing else that can be done for my back other thantry to manage my pain. I have had 19 back surgeries, including rods, broken back and rods on right side. My last surgery was the insertion of two morphine pain pumps, which caused my body to reject the plastic or some component thereof. They also inserted two dual-lead dorsal column stimulators, and even though all four of these pumps worked successfully, my body also rejected come component in the stimulators as well. One of the largest problems, second only to the pain, was the fact that I had 5 deep wound that went all the way down to my rectus muscle in my stomach. I had a staph infection from the pump as well as the stimulator. It took 6 months of wound care from the pain pumo, and now I am left with the most hideous scar. Same problem with my back, Oh well....this was supposed to be about LYRICA! Since January 2005, my doctor placed me on Lyrica and I thank God for it, because it has helped a great deal with my pain, however, after having to make an appointment to see an oral surgeon to remove all my teeth because of the Lyrica, I am LIVID!! No one eluded to the fact that Lyrica cound cause my teeth to rot out of my head, when I had the most wonderful white straight teeth. I just celebrated my 46th birthday a little over a week ago and I am facing dentures right in the mouth! There out to be a disclaimer, of which there were one. I am a label reader, and read instructions implicitly. At any rate, that won't help the halth of my mouth at this point. Is there a class action law suit out there somewhere, that would at the very least pay for any dental work, or at least warn those in the future? BE WARNED! You deserve a right to be informed. Signed, Oh My Missing Teeth in Oklahoma!
I don't think your teeth rotted as a direct result of lyrica. Its just that you didn't feel any early warning toothache as the lyrica blocked the nerve pain from your teeth. When taking lyrica you need to brush, floss, rinse etc twice per day and have regular dental check ups cos your capacity to feel tooth pain is reduced. Note - from your back symptoms I think you may have Arachnoiditis. Please google this condition to see its effects. Lyrica is one of the drugs routinely prescribed to arachnoiditis sufferers to help with neuropathic pain in the legs/feet.
I'm also on lyrica and I have lost all my top teeth and all but 7 lower teeth. I wasn't told this was even a possibility when I started.
I just found this thread after spotting someone link Pregabalin to tooth rotting on some druggie forum. I've been on it for about 6 months since I fell down the stairs and got nerve damage, and last month my front tooth just split in half. Within a couple of weeks it crumbled away and so did three other crowns, leaving me with a three-tooth gap on the right side. It seemed surreal and horrifying, but I thought maybe its the result of nearing 50 and having genetically rotten teeth. Now I'm convinced its the Pregabalin which I won't touch again. Right now I don't have the pain in my foot, but it will come back and I dread it without the only painkiller that worked. And now I'm scared that all my teeth are ready to drop out. Already had loads of painful, expensive dental work done.Is the damage irreversible? I doubt my doctor will have a clue. My life has fallen apart.
I have just been put back on Lyrica for about 6 months now and I have noticed that my teeth are just cracking off even at the push of a finger. They are very brittle now and I have 7 teeth that are missing at least half of the tooth now in less than 4 months time. I had a beautiful smile before taking this medication. Now I hate to smile as my perfect teeth are missing or half gone. I have done been told by the dentist that I would need major dental surgery to fix the issues or to have all of my teeth pulled and have false plates put in and I am only 36 years old. I also suffer from extreme muscle weakness now like my muscles don't even want to work anymore. I am tired all the time and my body just feels worn down from sun up to sun down. I have done a ton of research and have found I am not the only one having this issue after taking this drug. I also notice this is not on their list of side effects which seems weird to me since so many people are online complaining about this side effect with your medication. Something needs to be done here there is no way someone like me should be loosing my teeth like this one after another at such a young age.
I have been on Lyrica for one year and a half my teeth are just breaking off I have always had beautiful teeth I feel like I could die because I am so depressed with this situation
I gained 30 lb on Lyrica. I've been off it for over 4 years & still can't back to my "pre-Lyrica" weight. I didn't get tooth problems until it was too late. Ihad been on it for about a year. I had many crowns. I went faithfully every 6 months to have my teeth cleaned. My teeth have always been sensitive. Then on my one of my 6 month appointments my dentist said I had 13 cavities within 6 months. I read a book for women on thyroid disease. It said hypothyroidism could cause cavities. I went on thyroid medicine. I got all cavities fixed. Sadly within a year my teeth started just snapping off at the base. Ihad to have 3 of the bases removed by oral surgeon because they had root canal posts still in.. two more broke off. My dentist said he couldn't even clean my teeth because they are all rotting from inside out. I should get them all removed but I don't have the money & I can't go thru any more pain. I live with fibromyalgia & interstitial cystitis already. I went from a full set of nice teeth to missing teeth in every quadrant. I'm missing 3 teeth in right lower that makes me lisp if I don't work at talking. I'm furious. It's obviously a problem but still no mention by pharmaceutical company that makes Lyrica. I wondered if Neurontin caused same problems?
Thanks for posting this - I have been on Lyrica for 4 months and my teeth have become incredibly sore - I googled "will Lyrica make my teeth sensitive" and found your post - now I that I know from your experience I am so scared. My teeth ache badly - I have also gained weight badly - the insert in the pack warns of weight increase but no mention is made of teeth sensitivity. Am I going to lose my teeth ?? What can be done ?? My pain doc says I can't just stop taking the Lyrica - how do I wean myself of it. I am going for a back op in August but every time I try to stop taking the Lyrica u can't walk.
I was on Tramadol for over 5 years with no problems. Then I went off it & they put me on Lyrica. I was on for several years. I look at my pics from 2009. I was always complimented on my teeth. Now I've lost at least 9 teeth that snapped off at gum line. I just discovered all the enamel on another back took has eroded & I'm sure this one will break too. Now I rarely smile. I have no dental insurance so I can't get anything done. I use a water pic, don't drink soda, tea or coffee or anything acidic but all my teeth are rotting from inside out. When are people going to start going after manufacturer of Lyrica? Do they need X number of people to lose their teeth first.
My teeth are starting to get holes and chips and feel like I drank too much soda, which I don't, and i am on Lyrica and also Tramadol which also is being talked about as bad for your teeth. The lyrica has really helped me, so I am bummed because I guess I need to quit it. And now I hope I don't lose all my teeth. People are always commenting about my smile. :(
I checked Lyricas website, so far nobody is eve mentioning anything about teeth. By the time I discovered problem all my teeth had rotted from inside out. It's even hard to talk sometimes because of location of missing teeth. I don't have money to get all teeth pulled or get dentures. I'm in my 60's. There may be hope for younger people but not me. I figure it will be years before they are forced to admit link & file class action law suit. It will cost millions to fight pharmacetical. I forgot to see who even makes Lyrica.
I wish you the best of luck. I was on lyrical for a little over 9 months, I also have issues with most of my teeth being loose, right foot fungus including my toenail, blurry vision confusion mood swings and more. I am finally off this killer drug, I hope and pray that some day someone will hear our deep crystal of concerns and hold the money greedy pharmaceutical company responsible for putting this drug on the market for us to consume.
I was prescribed Lyrica along with other medications for fibromyalgia and have since had major dental deterioration.
If anyone is aware of a way to gain compensation please let us know.
Well,
Since I stopped taking Lyrica over a year ago the remainder of the teeth have managed to hang in there even without the support of the other teeth. The Lyrica worked for some nerve pains but I suppose they ought to advertise it as a dietary supplement since the amount and type of food you take in is in for a BIG change
In addition to ruining my teeth I also gained 30 lb that didn't all come off after I stopped Lyrica.
I had been on Lyrica for about 4 yrs. I went to dentist every 6 months flossed, etc. Then I went and in 6 months got 13 cavities! I went off Lyrica by then because my balance was off and my memory was getting worse. At the same time I read a book for women on thyroid issues and assumed cavities were result of hypothyroid. I also have severe fibromyalgia. I've now had 4 teeth pulled and 2 just snapped at the base. All of my teeth are rotting from inside out. I'm only dealing with one at a time because with the FM, I can't tolerate the pain even with pain meds. I used to have nice smile. Now I'm missing a tooth in every quadrant. All molars. I spent over $10,00 getting root canals & I think I had 6 crowns total. Most of them snapped. Talk about waste of money. Frankly, I hope I'll croak before I have to deal with rest of teeth. I can't afford it & I'm not a candidate for implants even if I could afford it. I never could stand anything in my mouth.
Started Lyrica February 2014, it is now January 2015. I have lost 8 teeth starting in June. Every tooth I had that had been worked on broke off at the gum. Most broke with no pain at all. I have no insurance and no way to get this fixed. I am now worried about the bacteria interning the blood steam and effected my heart valves or settling in my knee implants. Don't know what to do. Lyrica was a life saver for me from horrible nerve pain. Now what??
I have been on Lyrica for 6 years now. I have POTS with some pretty nasty neuropathic pain. I get burning so bad in my eyes that it feels as if there are onions sitting just inches away from my eyes all the time! This was 'before' taking Lyrica. There is no doubt that the drug works for pain relief. I think I would have lost my mind with the kind of pain that I was experiencing. However, I noticed around 18 months ago that my teeth were becoming very sensitive. I could feel it mostly in my top, front 6 teeth. It got to the point where I couldn't even bite into something as soft as a banana!!! To put any pressure on them was becoming more and more painful. I had them checked by my dentist and he said that the pulp had deteriorated. Since we were going away to Europe for a month, he decided to do two root canals in my front left center tooth and the one to the left of that. This didn't alleviate the pain in any way! I ended up having the center one pulled and an implant post put in. After waiting the 3 months for it to heal and having the implant put in, I then couldn't stand the pain of the other left one and had to have it removed! I now have two implants, at a cost of $3500 each!!! (Implants are VERY expensive in Canada!) Since that time, the front right center tooth and the one to the right of that, have now become just as bad as the original two. I had two root canals on these ones too. An Endodontist did these ones at a cost of $1200 each and I now fear that they are going to have to be removed and have implants as well. My front teeth are so painful that even TALKING is difficult!! We don't realize how much our tongues touch the backs of our front teeth until there is pain involved!! I now have to move my jaw in a different way in order to keep my tongue back from my front teeth as much as possible. This has caused some severe TMJ issues. I do my best to talk as little as possible as it's just too uncomfortable. It has had such a spiraling effect on my life. When I mentioned to my dentist that I was reading that Lyrica could possibly be the culprit, he said, "You can't believe every side effect that you read. The chances of it being that are pretty remote." However he is "perplexed" as to what could cause my otherwise decent, 6 front teeth to 'all at once' become so tender to touch and troublesome. Health care professionals do not like us to try to figure out our own health issues. Do they not realize that 95% of us only turn to the internet to search up these weird side effects when we are having some really devastating issues with our health and our own doctors can not figure it out! Besides, had I not been my own advocate, I would still be waiting for a proper treatment plan for my POTS, which has also been (at times) very devastating.
I wish I knew what to do here. I have tried Amitriptyline for my burning symptoms. It worked well but made me sweat profusely. Incidentally, the Lyrica makes me sweat profusely as well, but not quite as bad as the Amit. So do we live in pain with a full set of teeth, or lose our teeth to live with less pain? I know I can't live with the pain so I have no choice. All I can do is ask my doctor if there is something else I can take? It seems that I have tried a lot of drugs to find the one that helped with the pain. I just don't know what to do any more.....
Iwas also on Lyrica for about 4-5 yrs. I went to dentist faithfully ever 6 months. I had at least 5 root canals & crowns. Then I went for my usual checkup & in 6 months I had gotten 13 cavities. I was an RN but can no longer work . I read a book on Thyroid problems & it mentioned numerous cavities. Then I started wondering if it could be Lyrica. I had all cavities taken care of then my crowns stsrted snapping off, leaving only posts. Since then 3 more have done that. Every tooth has rotted from inside out. I'm devastated. I have severe fibromyalgia & painful bladder syndrome. I cant stand for anyone to touch my teeth, not to mention I dont have dental insurance. This all started when I was about 57. I'm now 62.
I have Tri-Geminal neuralgia and was prescribed Lyrica, it worked well to lessen my pain but within a short period of time (less than 1 yr) my teeth started to abandon ship. I went to complete an extraction and the techs there were alarmed as they showed me an X-ray they had taken one year before. It showed that I had all my teeth with a number of filings but, still there. The picture they took that day showed that I had eleven teeth left and they were going to extract two.
The reason for the extraction was that they had been breaking or coming terribly loose. My regular dentist had removed the others but did not fill comfortable removing these teeth. He had told me the loss of the teeth was due to one, or a combination of the meds I was taking.
I now have partials. I had stopped taking Lyrica because the mental effects it caused me. As soon as I stopped taking it the remaining teeth are fine.
