My doctor prepared me for the initial side effects, like you are describing, and it only lasted 3-4 days. It knocked me out, so I slept round the clock for the 1st 3 days, except for necessities like food(my husband would wake me) and bathroom. When I stood , I would easily lose my balalance and reach my hand to a wall for support. At the end of three days, I was positively elated that the unbearable pain had subsided. Prior to starting Lyrica I was absolutely frazzled with pain and lack of sleep, so the sleep was much welcomed.
If you are like most people, you'll be functional again very soon.
Feeling dizzy and like a drunk person, as you described; others describe as feeling high and/or exhausted, tired, etc, seem to subside in a matter of days or weeks. What matters to me is if it eliminates or reduces my pain so I have a better quality of life. It does for me. Although, now, 2 yrs on it, I'm learning that some of my other, newer difficulties could be lyrica side effects. For instance, I am tired easily. I now take afternoon naps, even though I have had sleep disturbance my whole life. I lack energy and enthusiasm for living.i have more joint pain in more places than before, and suffer dry mouth ( so dry, I sound like I have slurred speech since my lips don't slide over my teeth as when properly lubricated; I carry and frequently use Biotene artificial saliva mouth moisture spray.) I have weakness in legs or back? When getting up from squatting , but this could be due to spinal stenosis and subsequent 3-tiered laminectomy. I'm unsteady, my husband takes my hand getting out of car, helps so I don't fall going on stairs. I'm no longer agile or nimble and I stumble & fall easily. I'm no longer sure footed. When I walk down a long corridor, I worry that I look drunk b/c I seem to waver, sometimes bumping the door jamb passing through.
When I started Lyrica @ 75mg 3x /day, I felt exhausted but relieved that I could deeply sleep for the greater part of 3 days, only getting up for bathroom & to eat, if my husband woke me. I had balance problems and felt a little woozy, but so grateful for the sleep. I had been frazzled with what I thought was arthritis pain, nerve compression, not sure what at that time, but after 3 days I felt MUCH relief from the unbearable pain in many places in my body, mostly associated w my spine, neck, head and hot burning, prickling in feet and sacro iliac. The sleepiness & balance issues subsided also. I felt I had found a miracle. However, I could not stop the weight gain of nearly 40 lbs, & 10" to my waist in one year. Very discouraging. It's not b/c I eat more, I eat less, and very carefully, no indulgences in snacks or sweets, desserts, beverages. I've increased protein and reduced carbs, I keep an eye on the right kind of fats and nothing in excess. I have less appetite, but cannot lose even I lb. I hate it. But I could not live with the pain. I had no life, I was always in bed with Colpacs, TENS Unit & Vicodin. I don't know what to do about the big belly and all that weight. Anybody else like me?
Lyrica can cause those types of symptoms as side effects.
Learn more Lyrica details here.
And this isn't actually an analgesic that will relieve pain immediately, it can take 4 to 6 weeks for this to reach its full effects in your body and to see if it works for you.
However, with those side effects, it may not be the right medication for you to take and you should look into your other treatment options.
Is there anything else I can help with?
