I have had insomnia since childhood, off and on (mostly on) and not that I'm retired, thank goodness I can sleep until I feel like waking up. I was on Ambien for about 10 years, and for most of that time, it worked just fine. It was a joy, to go to bed, knowing that I would be asleep within a few minutes. Then, a few months ago, it stopped working. I had heard good things about Lunesta, so I asked to try that. I have NOT been impressed. Once I FINALLY get to sleep (and this can take 3 - 4 hours), I sleep long and hard for several hours. But getting to sleep is long, boring, and aggravating. I'm in the market for something better. I have an apt with the sleep clinic - for March of next year. Nothing was available sooner. Terrific, huh?
I'm on my third monthly bottle of Lunesta and am growing less impressed by the day. I can't seem to turn my mind off. My body is tired, but my mind won't shut down. I need something else.

Have you ever tried something that isn't actually a sleep inducing medication?
You may do better with something such as Trazodone, which the FDA classifies as an SARI antidepressant. It is very commonly used to treat insomnia, because it can induce drowsiness, plus it can calm the racing thoughts that tend to keep some people awake.
Other side effects may possible include nausea, dizziness and dry mouth.
It is an option you can ask your doctor about.
