Hello, Rita! How are you?
Yes, that can be done, as long as it's not a time released medication and your doctor approves. I've been doing this every day for several years, now. Before I had insurance, I discover it was much cheaper to buy 30 of the 50mg tablets, instead of 60 25mg tablets, and break them in half, since I take it twice a day. Most of them are even scored to make it easier to do so.
The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.
The one caution I would like to posit is to make sure you take it will a full glass of water and swallow it immediately. This medication tends to taste really bad, if it starts to dissolve in your mouth. I found that out the hard way and would not wish that experience on anyone!!
