Just saw my doctor this morning. He took me off Lisinopril and put me on Losartan. He said the lowest starting dose of Losartan is 50 mg so I don't think the 100 mg you are taking is concerning given the length of time you have been being medicated for HBP. I just started medication 3 weeks ago and Lisinopril was giving me a cough. Sure hope the Losartan works with no side effects. All the possible side effects of these medications scare me as much as the disease!!!

Did you continue to take it even after notifying your Dr.? I had suffered from extreme edema in my feet for almost 7 months and when I started Lisinopril it went away within 24 hours. I was so happy until a week later my lips swelled for two days. It went away and then 2 weeks later did it again slighty for one day. My Dr. took me off of it and prescribed Losartan. About 25% of the swelling in my feet came back almost right away :-/ I am so frustrated bcuz I was so relieved after 7 months of misery and embarrassment to show my feet (also had leg edema, some face and body edema along with it during those months) that it was all gone and not feel sluggish, to now having some swelling back. Just makes me think does that mean my blood pressure isn't being controlled as well with Losartan or is it just a chemical difference. I wish I could go back to Lisinopril.

The " difference " between the 2 Lisinopril / Losartan in My Opinion is Living vs. Horror , I had been taking Lisinopril until that Horrendous COUGH overtook my LIFE .
I saw my attending Primary and simply told her " I Refuse to take it any more " .
Life had become Pure Hell with that never ending painful horrid cough . Had it not been for my own studying of it's side effects " they'd " still have me " on it ".
I'd rather be DEAD than tortured taking that garbage .
I'm glad Losartan is available .
And how it is I was never asked about a " cough " to begin with convinced me who better pay attention to things " they " don't .

That is the same thing the Pharmacist told me to take Losartan one hour before bedtime,As Losartan can cause drozzynis.

Why don't you just take the losartan at night and get off the tradazone.

I've been taking Losartan for almost 2 years now due to the unbearable coughing that began apprx. 9 years taking Lisonopril .
I also take it prior to bed time or within an hour before bed time , works fine for me , that upper number 200+ is rather high .
I'd let your Dr. / Cardiologist know those Numbers , you don't want # 6 and that I mean by 6 Feet Deep .

What else are you taking? And what is your diet? There are a lot of things that effect your B/P . Give all this info to your doctor. I have been taking Losarten for years with no negative side effects .

I find it somewhat ironic that I've yet to ever read a comment that ever managed to help, if anything that mostly seemed to worsen / aggravate an unwanted situation. I finally decided to consider doing something on my own being in 42 years a Dr. has yet to in so far as avoiding another unwanted medical dilemma. I bought a Blood Pressure Monitoring Device along with a Note Book. Every Morning before breakfast I sit down / relax and Press the Start / Stop button on the device and it begins to Inflate the Sleeve, after a brief period a Digital Display gives me my Systolic / Diastolic & BPM numbers. I then take Note and Enter them into my Note Book and it is after seeing those Numbers I know what in all likelihood is going on, I also do that same thing Mid - Day, Numbers Talk. Funny as it may sound, while reaching for my Oatmeal container this morning it slipped out of hand, half of the container is now in my vacuum. After that I decided to take my Blood Pressure, low and behold it was 30 points Higher Systolic and noticeably higher on the other Two Numbers as well. Case in point, try to relax, live one day at a time, get a little exercise (if possible), try to eat the right foods, and if you have the money buy a blood pressure monitor as it may help avoid unnecessary trips to both the Dr. and ER.

Did you try taking the Losartan Nightly prior to reverting back to Lisinopril , I know that method eliminated the cough , the cough was an unbearable adverse reaction for me . Good Luck

I take a reading of blood pressure prior to taking meds & eating , twice daily a.m. / p.m. of course , sitting still at least 5 minutes prior / relax , maintain diary in book , numbers talk . Rather than have an opinion based on a " random reading " I know what is going on numerically based on facts NOT ONE RANDOM READING , a word to the wise , invest in a Blood Pressure Monitor and notebook if you are concerned about yourself , you come in alone and in most cases go out alone .

I have been taking losartan for a year and it has worked so well, I had to stop taking lisinopril because it was causing a horrible dry cough.

Thank you very much for the reply. A RN friend told me Losartin is very short acting, only two hours of coverage. If that is true, would I need to take the Losartin more than once a day?
With great appreciation for your wisdom and very useful info,
Linda

My elderly mother was on losartan. While in hospital they switched her to lisinipril without checking with her primary. Now the primary wants to switch back to losartan after a month on lisinipril. Is this safe to switch.?
Are there bad side effects from losartan? I heard it can cause serious mental reactions in elderly.

I ran out of my losartan 100- 12.5mg, and took one of my boyfriend's lisinopril 10-12.5mg. This was just a one time thing, and I know taking another person's medication is not wise. My question is, has anyone experienced cold sweats or sleepiness with lisinopril at all? I never had a problem with losartan.

It's not the amount, it's the effect it may have on your arteries. I also take 100 mg. of Losartan, and it's exhibited no side effects. I workout with no dizziness, and every time I check my BP, it's around 116/62. I did have high systolic before, and Lisinopril simply didn't bring it down; that worried me. The Losartan took it down. My opinion is that pharmacists actually know a lot more about these drugs than the doctors--when in doubt, ask your druggist (not the tech).

My doctor and pharmacist told me that one shouldn't be comparing Mg. The net effect is same as one medication is potent over the other.

Mac,
I had to Stop Lisinopril due to an agonizing COUGH , I'm glad I read some things Posted Here . Case in point , Night Sweats along with Swelling in Feet and Lower ankles , I had attributed it to braces I wear daily due to fractures .
Try this , take the med at night when you aren't up and about .
It's been only 6 days and that Horrendous Cough that was continuously worsening is nearly completely gone , you do not want that Cough , How that Drug was ever approved is beyond me .

There is no proper comparison of efficacy with lisinopril and losartan. They work differently, and what should decide which one works better is really based upon kidney and adrenal function. Both wind up dilating the arteries. But some patients produce more renin than others, so that has to be considered in the decision. Some patients experience diminished creatinine clearance with lisinopril (ACE) more so than with losartan (ARB), some don't. Elder patients tend to have more issues with
kidney function than younger patients. Your doctor can check your renal function with a BMP (basic metabolic panel) or further testing. With ANY meds causing kidney issues, your doctor may recommend a nephrologist (kideny specialist).
further testing.
