Loperamide For Opiate Withdrawal
UpdatedHello. I was on percocet, oxycodone, and opana for 4 yrs, then got on a suboxone treatment plan, and was stuck on the never ending train ride of trying to get off suboxone effectively and for good...... And I DID!! NOT 1 single withdrawal, none!!! And the god sent was Imodium (Loperamide) 2mg of an opioid (NOT OPIATE) little green (off brand) pill, saved my life, my sanity, my kids upbringing and my relationship w/everyone around me...... I tapered as small as I could as quick as i could (Dr office was shutting its door for good) I wanted to be done. Day ..1. of withdrawal I took 30mg of Imodium and I didn't feel bad, just no energy, no biggie, later that night i felt uneasy and restless, so I decided to take another 30mg and slept all through the night!!! Next morning day 2 woke up took 30mg and felt fine, same at night time.... Day 3 (most people's worst day of withdraw) I took 20 40mg Imodium and a hour later my 5 yr old kept asking me to take her to the park, so that's what we did, and yesterday was my 6 months clean off opiates and the devil drug suboxone!! 10 long years of drug use, and knowing a tiny green pill that cost $3 could make your life great again, is the best $3 ever spent!! Please feel free to ask any questions..... thanks "Moe"

Hello Ericka,
Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so glad to hear that you were able to stop your opiate dependency. This is the first I have ever heard of someone using loperamide to treat opiate withdrawals.
After some review I found that this medication is normally used to treat diarrhea. While it does contain opioids there is no high, and it will not relieve the pain you normally would expect from withdrawal. From what I can find it simply alleviates the severe gastrointestinal symptoms that come with opiate withdrawal.
I have also found from the National Institute of Health a warn that high doses of Imodium can lead to the symptoms listed directly below. The largest problem is that the NIH does not exactly specify how large of a dosage is considered "high dosage", however, they do state that doses above 60mg may cause nausea and vomiting.
- Urinary retention
- Paralyzed intestine
- Liver dysfunction
- Depressed breathing and heart rate
- Abnormal cardiac conduction
- Depressed central nervous system
- Stupor
- Lack of coordination
While I am extremely happy that this method works for you I must advise any other members discuss this with their primary care physician prior to attempting this method.
Thank you again for sharing your story and this information with the rest of us. Have a wonderful day.
thank you. i have heard that immdium helps some. i've always wanted to believe this.
Re: Kevin (# 1)
Yeah I have a friend who works at a detox who has told me there have been a couple patients who had to check in to get off the Imodium A.D. because they would experience with drawls after taking high doses to try to get through withdrawals. There have been enough time between stopping whatever drugs they were taking and checking into rehab that it wasn’t drug withdrawals anymore it was strictly from the Imodium A.D.
My question is how did u go to the bathroom withdrawing or not. You would be so bound up so tight it would be pure agony. I'm glad it worked for u but that's alot of anti diarrhea medication. I know everyone's system is different but glad it worked. Keep up the good fight...
