Looking For A Compassionate Pain Mangement Doctor In Or Near Columbia Sc Responsive And Willing To Write Pain Medications When Needed
UpdatedI'm looking for someone near Columbia, SC. I have been seeing doctors for chronic back problems for years with MRI's etc. I experience routine moderate to severe pain and the only person I have right now to see me quickly and right me prescriptions is my primary care who prefers I go to the specialist and that is what I want. The specialist I have found have been amazingly uncaring and unsympathetic despite ackowledging there are multiple issues. I just saw a neurosurgeon who is referring me to a pain management clinic and I found out it takes 1-2 weeks to see if they will even take your case....absurd and uncompassionate from a pain management facility as far as I'm concerned. Imagine a major flair up......will I have to wait 1-2 weeks to get any relief??? It's ridiculous!!! I have no desire to be addicted to pain killers but they work, can be responsibly managed, and allow me to have some decent quality of life. I am a husband and father and the chronic pain has a major negative affect on all aspects of my life. Any help finding any doctor in or near the Columbia, SC area would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, David! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having.
And I'm also very sorry to have to inform you that the days of having a doctor that you can get in immediately to see for pain medications and having them write them as needed are over. Due to the ever increasing rates of abuse, improper prescribing and over prescribing, new regulations have been put in place to try to curb these issues.
On top of making it harder for doctors to write such prescriptions, most pain management specialists have also found themselves flooded with patients, hence the long wait times to get in. Since general practitioners and surgeons can no longer write such medications on a long-term basis for most patients, they have to send them to pain management.
And yes, if you have a major flare, you'll have to wait for an appointment for help, everyone has to do the same. I admit that it is very frustrating, but the abusers have ruined it for everyone.
Even patients in pain management that suddenly find themselves with a bad flare-up and miserable can no longer go to a nearby ER for assistance, the ER doctors aren't allowed to handle such, anymore.
It's not that they are unsympathetic and uncaring, it's that they have very strict guidelines that they have to follow, or their risk losing their license to practice medicine and facing possible jail time.
As I mentioned already, there are major restrictions on your PCP, so you're very fortunate that they are still prescribing pain medications, when you need them.
I sincerely wish that I had better news to give everyone in a situation like yours, but I don't. The best thing you can do is to see what comes of your current pain management referral.
Does anyone know of a good doctor in that area that might be taking new patients faster?
