Loestrine Fe And Periods?

Updated August 6, 2021

I have been taking Loestrine Fe for over 2 years and have had spotting about every few months. A few days ago I had a very strong flowing period, which concerned me because I am not supposed to have any periods anymore. Also when I have a bowel movement I have blood in it. It doesn't hurt but it has happened three times now. Why is this happening?

Hello, Diane! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having.

Anyone taking oral contraceptives, even a woman who's past menopause, may have periods, due to the hormones in them. Thus, whoever told you that was wrong.

The estrogen in them causes the tissues to built up on the uterine wall and the progesterone is what stabilizes them, once it falls off, you experience your period. Thus, even if someone were menopausal, but on these hormones, they could still experience a period, as soon as that tissue built up enough to cause one to occur.

Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability and weight gain.

Is there anything else I can help with?
