I sometimes get my period and sometimes don't, so I am wondering if I were to have intercourse while on the white or purple pill am I still protected from pregnancy?

As long as you haven't missed any of the active tablets, then you are protected, regardless of whether or not you have a period.

The FDA lists the other possible side effects of oral contraceptives as including nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes and PMS-like symptoms.
