Live In De But See Dr In Md
UpdatedHi! I have been with a Dr who was a GP and he was taking care of all of my medications. He is located in MD. I moved to DE and have been unable to find a pain mgmt Dr who will continue my pain medications. All they wanna do is give me shots! So i have continued with my Dr in MD. Recently he had to stop writing scripts for pain meds and referred me to a pain mgmt Dr.
My question is....will I get in trouble for going to a Dr in a different state than what I live in? I get my meds filled in MD (and since it is a controlled substance I have to show my license which is a DE license).
I am on disability and have Medicare insurance.
Just wanted to check! Don't want to do anything wrong!
Thanks in advance for your help!

No, there is nothing wrong with getting your prescription filled outside of where you live, as long as you aren't doing this to try to get duplicate prescriptions filled to try and get more medication than you should. If there was an issue with filling it there, the pharmacy would have informed you.
Generally, most pharmacies don't know if you had an urgent need to travel, before you were able to get them filled, or etc., and most don't ask.
The only time I've known of this to be a problem is if a pharmacy was already maxed out, and simply do not have enough stock to fill more/new prescriptions, even then you won't get in legal trouble, they will just tell you to try a different pharmacy.
Caveat: Not all pharmacies will fill out of state prescriptions, and some will do so only if they are familiar with the prescribing doctor.
Here's an article with tips on how to make it easier to get out of state prescriptions filled.
Is there anything I can help with?
