Lisinopril - Throat Issue
UpdatedI got a bad cough and raw throat (from constant coughing and hacking) from taking liprosil. Has anyone had a simular experience, and if so, have your symptoms cleared up since you stopped taking this...its been about 2 week since I stopped and I'm still experiencing some sporadic coughing. Throat is not like sore but I can tell something is going on. Doc said cause of cough was meds and stopped them but will it or how long will it take to straighten out? need help please!

It really depends on how long you were taking it.
I experienced this when I was taking Lisinopril, along with other problems, I had been taking it about 6 weeks and it took about 3 weeks, after I stopped, for the cough to finally go away completely.
What other medication are you taking, now? If you have high blood pressure or a cardiac issue, it is very important that it be kept under control, if it is left go and you use no medications, it can lead to life threatening conditions.
Since I turned out to be extremely sensitive to most blood pressure medications, my doctor had to hunt for one that is known to cause few, if any side effects and we finally settled on Carvedilol. I've been using it for months, with no problems, at all.

Are there any other comments or questions?
Verwon ,
Well i took the lisinopril for about 2 months or so and have been off it for 2 weeks and 1 day. I dont take any other meds and my BP has been slightly elevated for several years and my doc just recently decided to treat it so it will be ok until I get past the coughing. Its like yesterday during the day I hardly coughed but as soon as I layed down to go to bed it started.
I coughed some today during the work day but its ok right this minute. Just ready to get back to normal as I never had this cough before the med.
I was only on it for 5 days and developed a bad cough but along with my cough my tongue and throat began to swell. Ive only been off two days and still have the cough mostly at night.
I coughed so much I had to quit taking it. After about 10 days I quit coughing. After another couple of weeks I started taking it again. Started coughing again - a lot. Quit taking it for good about a week ago but coughing continues and it is a bad cough. Nothing stops it for very long.
I started taking Lisinopril on September 27- October 30
One week after taking the medicine I developed a cough it felt like dust in my throat and then would cough and then gag. I have been off this medicine for 17 days and still have this cough. I am trying to find out how long it will last.
I take 40 mgs. of lisinopril twice a day for about a year now. I have that horrible cough, my dr. said I would get a hacking cough, but this is out of control. People look at me like,, why don't stay home with that terrible cough. It just won't go away, and I can't quit the meds.
Cookie, you may not be able to quit BP/cardiac medications, but there are other ones you can try. There is no need to keep using one that is causing such a problem, when there are over 100 different medications in these treatment categories on the market.
If you look at the following article, there is a section on the drug treatment options, with links to learn more about them, so you know what you can discuss with your doctor:

I had the same problem, when I lived on the east coast and docs just kept wanting to throw a medication at me and not worry if it made me miserable. After moving to the pacific northwest, I finally got a doc that understands and worked with me, so we found drugs that work, but allow me to have a great quality of life.
If your doctor won't help, then see a different doctor!!!
Is there anything else I can help with?
I was taking lisinopril for over a year. I had complained to my dr. about the cough after a few months on the medication but he couldn't figure anything out why I was coughing so much. After a year and some months of constant coughing, I switched to a different dr. On the first visit, I told her about the cough, and she immediately told me it was the lisinopril and switched my meds to Benicar. After taking the Benicar for about a week, I stopped coughing completely. What a relief
OMG !!!! I cannot believe I stumbled upon this site ! I was checking for withdrawal info from lisinopril and find out that so many have had a cough with it....I HAVE HAD AN UNEXPLAINED COUGH FOR 2 YEARS NOW !!!...same amount of time I have been taking this medicine !!! Now I know--finally !!!
Hello, yes I had those problems and worse with lisinopril. An article I read by a doctor said to use Delsom for the cough. My cough lasted me for months after I quit. In his article the doctor said that something gets in your lungs that doesn't get flushed out of your body. He said it could take weeks or months to cough it all out. I need to find his article again and post the link. I found it by doing a search on lisinopril after effects or the lisinopril cough.
