Life After Methadone

After my boyfriend went to detox off of a 5 year use of methadone. He first tried to quit cold turkey went into horrible withdrawal and almost went back to get a fix of H to kill the withdrawals. Went to detox for 7 days and they tapered him off methadone. Now that he is out seems detached and stand offish. What are the effects of coming off methadone? Should I take it personal it makes me feel like we are done. I just want to be there for him.

Hello, Layla! How are you? I am very sorry about the issues that you guys are dealing with.

Methadone is actually very highly addictive and it can cause severe withdrawals. If they detoxed him in only 7 days, then he is likely still dealing with some withdrawal effects. It would be best, if you really care, to give him some more time to adjust and deal with this.

There are many people who never manage to get completely off of Methadone, instead they often end up on a lifetime maintenance dose. That's how awful of a drug it is.

Thanks for responding. He has completely shut me out. Said he is emotionally numb. I am trying to not take it personal but my heart is breaking I want to be there for him but he won't let me he completely changed. I see the great man he is. I can't force myself in his life either. I'm so confused.

It takes at least 30 days to detox off of methadone. There is no short cut and no way around it. I have been a opiate addict for over 40 years and have been taking methadone on and off for the past 15 years at local methadone clinics. I speak from experience. Although the withdrawals are not as sever as opiate withdrawals, I guarantee your boyfriend will not sleep for 30 days without help from the doctor.
