Levoxyl Availability
UpdatedHas Levoxyl been taken off the market again?? In November, 2016 I am being told by the pharmacy that I use (Walgreens) that Levoxyl has been taken off the market again because of quality problems, but I am not finding any information about such a recall on the internet.
I called Pfizer, and Levoxyl 200mcg has indeed been taken off the market again.
No estimate as to when it will be available.
Has anyone explored other viable alternatives to Levoxyl in the meantime?
From what I understand, there's always Synthroid or generic Levothyroxine which are commonly prescribed. Is Levoxyl really much different? If so, in what way, because it seems to be the same drug with a different name (aside from fillers)...
I've also heard about various thyroid products such as 'ArmourThyroid' made by Allergan, that other people here on MedsChat have reportedly had success with. According to the manufacturer's webpage, ArmourThyroid uses natural, porcine-derived thyroid hormone replacement containing both T4 and T3.
Just wanted to share those extra options with readers who may be forced to find a new form of treatment.
You guys should all try Unithroid, that's what I use...it's a brand and it's just a $3 copayment a month...I've told all y hypothyroid friends about it and they love it! Ask your doctor and spread the word! Hope this helps!
Just called to check on the recall and Pfizer said there was none
Ive had horrible reactions to my new Levoxyl.
Lips swelling, brain feels like it will burst, itchy, blotchy skin to name a few side effects.
It seems like they changed the fillers. I have the same issues with generic thyroid meds.
If you have a good compounding pharmacy near by you can have something compounded. Unfortunately, I can't take the NDT, too much T3.
Good luck to all.
I called last week to get a refill of 200 mcg of Levoxyl only to find there is none. Researching it I found this forum. I really don't want to change to Synthroid. I did during the recall and it messed me up big time! Why can they pull it off the market without a reason and especially without notifying anyone? I have no thyroid due to cancer so I need the medicine. Changing brands really messes my body up...brain fog, etc. I'm not looking forward to changing meds again.
Unithroid is a great alternative to levoxyl..It's a brand and it's been on the market Almost 20 years without any issues...It's only just a $3 copay for commercial insurance and has great coverage...Hope this helps!
Can u guys let me know if that helps with Unithroid? Ask your doctor...Thanks!
Just spoke with Pfizer (1-13-2017). Lower doses will be available mid-January. The 200 mcg will be available in early February. They were concerned about all the shortages from all the calls they have received. Very nice people I spoke with. Hopefully we will all have our Levoxyl within the month!
I can't find .075 ANYWHERE I think phizer is not telling the truth in regard to production. I am calling phizer on Tuesday. I am going to have to switch medications AGAIN. I am glad these Big pharma companies care about the people that need the meds and I love that Walgreens doesn't warn you until they only have 3 pills left on shelf for your refill.
LEVOXYL IS AVAILABLE! My prescription was filled today! I had to get 100 mcg and will take 2 of them until 200 returns to the market next month.
Just curious, where do you live? In Berkeley CA and no one has 90 day quantities, just leftovers of 50 mcg. Not CVS, Costco Walgreens etc.
I reside in TN. I have my medications in hand. Walgreens is where I get my medications. Hopefully, in CA, you will soon get your medication. I really wish Pfizer would let us know (in advance) when the meds are not going to be available.
Thank you for responding, hope we get it here soon.
Levoxyl 88 mcg is still unavailable. Has been since early December as far as I know and no date as to when it will be available again I refill through both Express Scripts mail order and Costco.
I called Pfizer yesterday and they said there is no longer a problem with. 88 mcg I tried to order once again from CVS still not available so frustrating
called today 1/31/17 and they said that levoxyl was recalled again and MIGHT be available in February. Told me to call back next week to get update.
As of today, 1-31-2017, the last recall was in November 2016 and only for the 200 mcg (100 count) bottle due to "superpotency". They've had enough time to clear the recall so I'm not sure why there is still an issue. I take 200 mcg but was able to get 100 and double up.
King Pharmaceuticals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pfizer Inc, has initiated a recall of LEVOXYL (levothyroxine sodium) at retail pharmacies. LEVOXYL is a prescription medicine approved to treat hypothyroidism and prevent certain types of goiter.
LEVOXYL Alert - American Thyroid Association
THIS IS WRONG! There is no current recall on the American Thyroid Association website with the exception of the one in 2013. The only current recall listed on the FDA website is for 200 mcg due to the fact the product may not meet specification throughout shelf life.

You should try Unithroid brand! It’s only $3 a month and works just as good!
Re: Laura (# 24)
I've made friends with the Pharmacy Manager so I called her. I think I'm the only one on 200mcg of Levoxyl at that Walgreens. Just to be sure she went ahead and ordered more. Yours shouldn't have any issues getting them from their supplier. I called Pfizer when they recalled it last year. The nurse I spoke with was extremely nice and knowledgeable. If your pharmacy says they can't get it, have them call one of the Tennessee stores since we aren't having an issue.
I did reach out to the Pfizer website and asked about it to which they replied that there were no known supply or production issues. As I was taking my script this morning I was thinking I hadn't heard back from Walgreens. I'm 10 days into my month and they haven't circled back to me to completely fill this month's script. I'm glad to hear there are no issues with the supplier, but grow increasingly frustrated with my pharmacy. Happy to hear your pharmacy better controls their inventory.
Re: Laura (# 21)
Update: My local pharmacy (Walgreens) is not experiencing a shortage. I hope your pharmacy gets what you need soon.
Re: Laura (# 21)
I'm so glad you posted this about Walgreens and supply issues. I will check with them tomorrow. Levoxyl works best for me also. It is very frustrating that they keep having issues! This is a life-sustaining medication for me! I take it and Cytomel (which is almost $2.00/pill).
Re: MRSmith (# 6)
My situation is the same to yours, but I alternate 175 and the 200 mcc every other day (infuriating because I have to pay for 2 copays for 15 tablets of each per month). Doc says it is the optimum dose for me. Here it is 2017 and Walgreens is telling me again there are supply issues. Levoxyl works so much better for me than levothyroxine and is more affordable than the Synthroid. It's terribly frustrating to have a drug that works and to find availability such a chronic issue.
