Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 14)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

try eliminating wheat and gluten from your diet for a week and drink extra water. I had similar problems... turns out it was a gluten sensitivity

Hi Scoop

I am 44 & have been on levothyroxin for 10 months, started at 100mcg, then 150mcg & have been on 200mcg for about 4 months. I am also going thru the menopause so I totally understand what you mean. I felt good for aboiut 4 months, not so tired etc but now I feel under the weather constantly, have constant swollen glands, feel tired, am a couch potato etc etc I dont know if some symptoms are the Levothyroxin or the menopause. My Dr keeps giving me antibiotics whenever I see him about stuff.....i also get alot of earache which Ive never had before!!!!!

I developed a goiter and was very tired all the time. My thyroid would go from slow to fast The dr treated me with radioactive iodine to stop the thyroid from functioning. Then I took Armour which stopped working after awhile, then I was given Synthroid. I was always tired, but the drs said my blood levels were fine and they could not give me a higher dosage as it would be bad for my heart. Finally I found a doctor who said I needed compounded T3. A normal thyroid provides T4 and some of the T4 changes into T3. A person needs both kinds. Levothyroxine makes only T4, but we need both T3 and T4. Now I take the compounded T3 twice a day and a small amount of Levothyroxin and feel better than I've felt for years. I also take kelp for my iodine-dependent thyroid, because the iodine in kelp is good for my thyroid. Since I started taking the kelp, my thyroid must be functioning a little, because I need a smaller dose of thyroid replacement hormone now. When my dose of thyroid hormone needs lowering, I will have high blood pressure and fast pulse. The dr says that is a symptom that the dosage needs lowering. I have Wilson's Syndrome, which means my body wasn't using the Levothyroxine. The medicine was just floatinig around in my blood stream making the blood tests look like I had plenty. The thyroid hormone wasn't getting into my cells though until I started taking the compounded T3. The T3 and the kelp made a big difference in how I feel and the brain fogginess is gone. I hope this helps someone else, too.

I suffer from Arrythmia, Hypertension and prediabitis. Doctor found that my thyroid has a low metabolism and put me on levothyroxine. So far I don't have issues with the drug. I'm also taking METPROLOL SUCC ER 50MG for my hypertension and this week Doctor put me under NORVASC because my Hypertension still a little bit high. Dunno if this drug may increase my arrythmia. I was wondering if someone that has the same conditions has any issues with levothyroxine. Tks.

It is the long term side effects that you have to watch out for. I was on Levothyroxine for over 7 years and started having problems in the last couple of years I was on it. Heart problems mainly. Irregular beat, skipping beats, premature heart beat, beating irratically and unable to get enough breath. Just be careful on this drug is all I am saying. You may not have any noticable side effects until you are on the meds for some time. Good luck with your treatment.

I was loosing hair so badly that even my husband noticed, and made a comment I went to a dr., who I like alot, and he recommended taking Biotin, a natural supplement and in about one month I noticed a great improvment in my hair. Also, my fingernails started growing so fast that i am cutting them once a week now. It has definitely helped me and other people have noticed that my hair is looking thicker. Also women who are going through menopause have a double wammy on the hair loss problem. Several of my friends and family have started taking it and it has helped them also. Good luck. I take 5000mcg per day.

You should drink lots of water, and tell your doctor...Check your blood sugar...every symptom is important to let them know about...tell your regular Doc and your specialists.

I started taking Levothyroxine one month ago. I get head rushes, feel strange -- woozy, tired. Additionally, I have been dieting all month but weighed myself today and I had gained a pound. I didn't have any symptoms but my doctor gave me a series of blood tests with a routine exam and made me have a 2nd thryoid test just to be sure, before prescribing medicine. I had to retest after 3 weeks and never received a call from the doctor, so I assume it's a good test result. Don't know that I want to continue taking this forever, though, and I stopped taking calcium supplements because the directions said not to take calcium within four hours of Levothyroxine -- and I always took a calcium supplement in the morning.

Does anyone have excessive thirst?

Yes Bonnie you would get very sick, as anyone with a thyroid problem know you can't NOT take your meds... Adjij- stay off the boards unless you can offer some real input!

I always had a "buzzing or Zapping" feeling in my head almost like when you get an electrical shock but just in my head. Since changing to synthroid I don't have it anymore.

Hey does anyone have red eyes in the morning and during the day? I've been taking Levothyroxin for 3 weeks, and I'm having joint aches as well, especially at night. I was taken off of Amour (taken from pigs) which the doctor said it was to high, and I should take Levothyroxin which is geared more for people. Really, I believe I was doing better with Amour. Let me know if you have red eyes.

I posted awhile ago with all similar problems. I was on levo for 5 yrs and never thought I had problems. then, i started using a new dr. when I moved. they lowered my dose (against my better judgement) I went wayyy down hill from there. It took 6 wks on new dose, test again, they said my levels were good. I felt horrible! took me another month + to find a new dr... got an appt. 4 wks. later..I'm now 14 weeks into feeling awful and many lbs. I went to new dr. (specialist) tested, wait a week for results, come back 2 wks later, (17 weeks into this saga) he said although I was in the "normal" range, I was JUST making it there, just a slight change and I would have been out of the normal range. that is where most drs. mess up. they look at the numbers only. HE ASKED ME HOW I FELT!! wow! whe I said horrible. The first thing he did was switch me to Synthroid, saying NAME BRAND ONLY! he upped my dose, retested, upped again and retested. I was FINALLY feeling better after MONTHS of this mess that could have easily been avoided if the first dr. had just listened to me about how I felt.

During all of this, I did my own research, the medical researchers (as of 2010)admitted to not knowing what "normal" range is because every BODY is different! My advice is this, if you don't feel right, listen to your body and keep trying new drs until you find one that helps your body feel better. good luck to all of you! I hope this info. helps someone out there!

Johnny - Yes! I had EXACTLY the same side effect. Amazingly enough, it will go away after about 5 or 6 months - once ur body has adjusted to the meds. Hang in there!!!!
