Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 11) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

I'm 66, have had a TSH of 6+ and T3 at bottom of limits for 10 yrs, with tiredness, weight gain, mental fog, hair loss etc., but my doc always said it was old age. Have now seen a specialist who put me on levothyroxine - starting 25mcg, to build to 50 over next month. Have only taken three doses but since day one am suffering violent nausea, bloating, churning intestines and am producing so much gas I'm a health hazard! Is this normal? And will it go away?

I was diagnosed with hypo about 2 years ago...randomly the doctor took me off of levothyroxine and I started feeling bad again. I had blood work done and my tsh was normal. So I thought It was all in my head. I finally went back and my tsh was messed up again and now I am on Levothyroxine again. It has been about 6 days since I started it. I am feeling the same...weird feeling in my head and tingling in my arms and legs and even blurred vision at some points...is this normal and will it go away??

I HATE LEVOTHYROXINE. It makes me feel like crap, I've changed a lot physically and psychologically, since I started taking the levothyroxine, and I am only 22 years old.

age 50 had cancer and a total thyroid removed 26 yrs ago. Synthroid meds 225 combination of two pills. All other meds. Generics lower my tsh. My total tests come out to 2.0 Need to be at 1.0. This is thyroid tests. Weight is out of this world for my frame size. I use to be very petite. Persons that have not seen me in a long time. Think i like to eat alot. Not so. Comment can be hurtful but what the heck I'm still here. Hubby, ground adults kids (four) one grandchild etc. Keep your heads up. the brain buzz goes away. think positive. Walk, talk to good friends. Family first.

I read that one of the side effects of taking thyroid medicine is hair loss. I've been on levothyroxine for a few years and now have bald spots on my head. My sides are completely gone. I keep the top longer to hide it, but if this keeps up, I'll have to wear a wig. A friend of mine, who also takes the drug, is now wearing a wig because of the same problem. I tried to go off the meds, but after a week and a half, I was feeling too exhausted to function well. Is anyone experiencing excessive hair loss? (I haven't read through the several pages here) If you know of any natural remedy or replacement for levothyroxine, please let me know.

Started levothyroxine in August after RAI treatment for Graves in April. Feeling much better and have not had any side effects other than increased hair loss. After reading Victoria's post, I will be contacting my physician next week so see if there is something else I can take. The idea of wearing a wig is not pleasant but I guess would be better than the way I felt prior to RAI.

You should all try Armour. Recently a dr actuallly lied to me and told me that the government shut down armour and I would have to take Levothyroxine. It is making me sick. Armour is gentle, steady, no ups and downs,no side effects. It is not a chemical. Try it,...I am going to get back on it, with or without this particular doctor.

I have been trying for 18 months to take levothyroxine as my T4 was 4.7 but the only plus side is I'm slightly less sleepy!!. The itchyness and shakes are bad but the palpitations are the worst. I take about half my prescribed dose to try to minimise the ghastly effects. My GP thinks I'm a crazy lady and puts my the AF on my ecg down to 'just one of those things'. If anyone has any suggestions it'd be good to hear them.

Thanks for the info, Linda. I'll give Armour a try. I heard about it a few years ago, but was told it was no longer available.

I have gone up from 125 to 137. My head feels weird.
My thyroid is way underactive so the dr. adjusted it.
I have no appetite, and I feel very anti-social, and very depressed.

hey I was just looking up info on hypothyroidism and memory and saw your response. I'm 18 and diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 2 months ago. I've been taking 50mg of levothyroxine and am starting synthroid tomorrow. I'm studying to be a doctor and realized my memory is often foggy after reading textbooks, and was wondering after 1 year if you feel that your memory has improved at all? thank you

I was originally diagnosed with Grave's disease (hereditary hyperthyroidism) back in 1985. I took the radioactive iodine treatment in 1988 (3 years treating with meds). I never had to take any meds again until 2001. At that time I was diagnosed hypo. I have been on meds ever since. My weight gain of 50 lbs never dropped. My meds have recently been increased to 175mcg. One difference, I requested "Synthroid" instead of generic. While I'm not losing the weight, I do have more energy. I never felt any of the other symptome many of you mention.
Try the brand name and see how you feel. I've heard many people feel better on that.
Good luck to you all

I got put on Levothyroxine as my thyroid has not been working for many years, but the symptoms were ignored by GP.....I have recently chucked the lot in the bin, I have completely lost my appetite and at only 7 1/2 stone I cannot afford anymore weight loss, my hair is falling out and I have been suffering terrible depression. I got the funny feeling in my head every morning but it only lasted an hour or so. I don't think this drug is ideal for an awful lot of people, but is given because its cheap......gonna take my chances with the heart problems I previously had!
