Levothyroxine And Your Period - Should I Worry If I Don't Get It

Do I have to worry about missing my period while on levothyroxine, since that might be the reason why I missed it?

Hi. I'm 34 yrs old and I've been on levothyroxine tablets for some 2-3 months. I've been on my period for 5 days with back pain and feeling very crampy. What should I do? Please help me.

If missing your period becomes a regular thing, I would encourage you to consult your prescribing doctor and/or a gynecologist who specializes in the female reproductive system; more or less just to be on the safe side. However, my understanding is that missing periods may be more common when taking things that alter your hormones. NIH also lists "menstrual changes" as a less common side effect of Levothyroxine.

According to NIH, "pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back, or neck" is listed as a less common side effect of Levothyroxine.

If it becomes too bothersome or severe, you should contact your doctor immediately and consider asking about other alternatives.
