Levothyroxine And Dizziness
UpdatedI've been taking Levothyroxine 25mg for almost four months, first three months was fine, now seem to be having dizzy spells alot. (every day) also feeling bloated. Has anyone experienced this after 3 months of taking them? Another thing a couple of months ago my period was 13 days late!! its always been irregular but not normally that late. We are trying for a baby so i'm wondering if it could be pregnancy symtoms also.
Hi. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I just wanted to reply because you aren't alone! I started at 75mcg, then 88, then 100. I experienced a dizzy spell followed by tremors in both hands and legs and was rushed to the ER. They thought I was having a stroke. Gave me an MRI/MRA, heart ultrasound, EKG and found everything to be normal. They did find my thyroid elevated so now i'm on 112mcg (after 3 months was on 100) . I have experienced dizziness everyday since getting out of the ER and did spend a night. It's going on 2.5 weeks now and they are sudden. I'm being referred to an Endo to see what's going on. Not sure if it has to do with thyroid or something else, but I can't imagine what else it could be since the ER did thousands of dollars worth of tests! I know that a hormonal imbalance causes dizziness but who knows..could be adrenal fatigue. Also, I was on Synthroid for about a month and for some reason got my period twice in a month, so back to Levo. I'm only late maybe 6 days, yet another month 3 days early. I personally feel Levo just messes up your whole system if it's not given right. Make sure every 3 months you get a blood test and see the doc so they follow how your body reacts to it. Best bet is to see a Endo. Today is the FIRST day I didn't experience any dizziness and all I did was lay down, tilt my head back all the way to let some blood rush to my head. Don't know if that helped or what's going on. Good luck! Dizziness is NOT fun on a daily basis.
@jane,
I definitely agree with you that Levo can mess up your whole system if it's not given right.
With Levo, dosing must be carefully controlled to achieve TSH levels within the normal reference range. Long-term suppression of TSH values below normal values will frequently cause cardiac related side-effects.
Overdose can result in heart palpitations, abdominal pain, nausea, anxiousness, confusion, agitation, insomnia, weight loss, and increased appetite.
Other side effects can be viewed in the link below:

I hope this info helps!
Dear Correspondent/I have been on Levothyroxin 6 months. I too feel dizzy and disorientated for a few seconds revery day, when standing up after lying down or sitting for a wile and I stand up, and thtis is NOT like my normal lifelong condition; I never was dizzy like that before on a regualr basis ,on even at all.. It is only slight, but honestly a little distressing if you never have had that feeling every day.for a few seconds now and then.. Also, my feet feel bizarrely hot 24r hrs a day. Has anyone else felt that heat?
I was diagnosed hypo with TSH around 6 so started Levo at 25 mcg ever other day. Was fine for 2 months, TSH dropped to 4 but still high so increased Levo to 25 mcg/ day. Immediately dizziness became a part of daily life some days with extreme vertigo and vomiting. I backed off the dosage to pill ever other day again with some improvement but dizziness still throughout most days. I then stopped Levo for 6 weeks and gradually got back to no spinning. I tested again and TSH elevated again to 6 so decided to restart Levo at 1/2 pill day. Confussing the issue back when i was dizzy was i had a 4 week bought with the flue so was/am uncertain if dizziness was related to that with swollen inner ear issues(?). So I'm back on Levo taking at night with head spinning when I turn it in bed and get up. If I lower my head to tie my shoes it starts, if I tilt my head back it starts, I get motion sickness easily in the car and it all feels Levo related and don't know what to do. Any suggestions????
I began Levothyroxine 25 MCG on May 21, 2013. Can't pinpoint the exact day that the dizziness & odd feeling began but it began a few days after beginning the meds. I experience this each day. Dizziness is not listed as a side-effect of this med. My blood pressure is good according to my last Dr. visit. Stopping the Levothyroxine on my own as if today and informing my Dr. We will see if this dizziness stops after a week.
I have had the same thing....dizziness/vertigo and so about 2 months after I started Levothyroxine. Last week, I had to go to the ER because while I was sitting here at the computer and I had the worst dizziness/vertigo I had ever had and thought I was having a stroke. Seeing my own Dr. today because I can't live like this.
I am on 75mcg for 2years. I noticed unintentional shifting sensation when I am sitting down and standing. The dizzy spell is getting worse every day. I complained to my doctor. He said that I rather get dizzy spell than stopping levothyroid medications. I have made appointment with endocrinologist. Hopefully, he will help me because it is not fun.
I've been on Levothyroxine for years. I hesitated taking the medication for about a month... when I finally did start taking it the DR. put me on 25mg really no improvement after a year, so my Dr. up the dose to 50mg felt a little better. but the numbers where reading low... the Dr. up my meds 75mg that's when I started feeling dizzy ever time I walked it felt like I was going to pass out, I felt so weak I didn't want to leave the house a couple of times I went to the ER. All my evaluations came back fine. I told my Dr. what was going on he went back down to 50mg.... skip to two years later and a Endocrinologist who says my Thyroid numbers still not normal he put me on an even higher number 127mg. here I am feeling even worst than I did before I started taking Levothyroxine... I should have went natural.
This is a follow up to my previous post. I finally went to endocrinologist and after checking me out, he denied that my dizziness has nothing to do with levothyroid. He referred me to a neurologist. At this time, I decided to do more research based on my background as a chiropractor. I used epleys maneuver to get rid of my dizziness. Please find a professional to help you with it before you do more harm to your self. I feel much more better than before. I am still taking 75mcg with little or no dizziness. Hopefully you all get better like myself. Chris.
Hi I have an under active thyroid I've been taking pill for about a year with no side effects what so ever , I am only talking .05 mil but I can't drop wait as a matter of fact I'm gaining weight can I take pill to make it 100 mg does it affect me in any way
Yes, I recently started getting hot all the time, I'm wondering is it menapause. The dizziness started about a month ago. My thyroid level was high so they up my dosages. It didn't change the feelings I'm feeling.
Yes my feet will burn like they are on fire and also after taking it I've started having dizziness at different times. I'm on 25 MG only but I'm going to not take it for awhile and see what happens.I've been taking it for about 6 months and the dizziness recently started.
My mom has been on levo for over 10 yrs and she suffers with Extreme dizziness....so bad that last week she couldn't get up off her couch. She spent a week in the hospital because she couldn't move without dizziness enveloping her. She too thought she was having a Stroke. She also has occasional bouts of vertigo. The dizziness gets worse as time goes by, but it's every day, sometimes 24/7. No dr can explain this, and I've taken her to several dr. The neuro dr did not have an explanation for it either, and did ct's, and mri. For some reason today,(I'd like to thin it was God, because I've been praying that there will be a way to find out what's going on with her. I decided to question hypothyroidism ....and my research has taken me to this forum and one other..........all talking about dizziness and levothyroixine!!! There's got to be something to this
Hot feet!!! Omg yes!!! Thought I was just weird. But, dizzy spells, am nausea, fatigue, sleepless nights... My Levo adjusted from .112 ( 5 yrs) to .110 ( 3 weeks) ... Now, my period has started /stopped three times in two weeks?!?
I'm on Levo also. Taking 0.5 for 2 years now. I also am on metoprolol scc for blood pressure.
I get dizzy every day in the mornings. I don't know if it's the levo or metoprolol. It lasts on and off all day. Don't want to go out or go anywhere afraid going to faint. I don't like the dizziness. Wonder if half a pill in the morning and half at night would help. Does anyone know or do it that way? I want my life back!
Been taking 50 mg Levothoroxine since being diagnosed with Hashimotos (alrhough I had zero physical symptoms). It seems this medication is ruining my sense of balance. I'm sleeping, and wake up terrified with symptoms of vertigo. I kind of wake up feeling hungover, but without the alcohol. I also take Activella for menopausal symptoms which I'm going to stop, because I don't know if that may also cause dizziness. Anyhow, I'm ready to go off both meds and try to fix myself through diet. I've never felt worse. Things were fine before the medical community intervened with these drugs.
As long as you are on Levothyroxine or Synthroid you are never going to feel well. After my thyroidectomy, I was in agony with whole body muscle pain plus other things. I consulted my endo who only told me that it was in my head and that my numbers were right where they should be. Never listen to that because endo's adhere to one thought of mind. Everyone is not the same. I am now on Naturethroid, which is a natural thyroid hormone. It contains everything that your own natural thyroid used to give you. After learning on the thyroid forum, I found that you are not like another person. What you take to make you feel whole again may not be the same amount that someone else needs. Try it and start to live. The only downfall is that not all doctors are conventional and may not want to dose a script. But there are some doctors who are in the know who will readily give you a script. Of course, the pharmaceutical companies don't want you to know about the natural thyroid hormone doctors, because it cuts into their profit. Fight for your health and go find doctors that will help you. Stop suffering.
Re: Dizzy Dean (# 4)
I'm older and have been on Levoxyl (prev.) for 25 yrs. and then, got switched to Levoxynine. In that time since I've been on levoxyene, I've had sudden vertigo; out of the blue, 3 times; no waning. The first time, waited 3 mos. to get into an ear, Nose and Throat guy and by that time, symptoms had gone away. and no diagnosis. Never said a word re: thyroid medication. I had vertigo for 3 days 3 weeks ago. I slept in a recliner; a bed or sofa, is the worst place to lay down with vertigo! I always keep generic Dramamine on hand, just in case of vertigo. Took 1 pill per day for 2 days (Dramamine) and it passed. good luck!

After reading all of these replays I am wondering if these pills are causing all of my problems. I've had tinnitus for 10 years and am now having vertigo and dizziness. Also have hypothyroid and taking levothyroxin.
Re: Cheryl (# 19)
So many times I have told people on here that Levothyroxine is poisoning your body. Levothyroxine and Synthroid are synthetic drugs. They are not giving you what your body needs to function. I wrote a whole thing about this. So I will tell you to go buy the books, volume 1 and 2 of STOP THE THYROID MADNESS. She is a thyroid patient who almost died until she found natural thyroid hormones to replace the synthetic ones. After my total thyroidectomy in 2010, I wanted to die the month that I was on Levothyroxine. I thought, if I have to feel like this I do not want to live. I was in such whole body muscle spasms that I could not function. I did my research and found out about natural thyroid hormones. The name of the thyroid that I am on is called Naturethroid. The old doctors talk against it and will not prescribe it because they know little about it and it is easier for them to prescribe synthetics. Do yourself a favor and learn about what is best for you. Naturethroid will give your body everything that your own thyroid used to give you. You may not have a total thyroidectomy like me, but there are people on it whose own thyroid do not function well. I thank God everyday that I found something other than synthetic medicine. The pharmaceutical companies give the doctors big perks to keep dosing their synthetic meds.

I agree. There's something about Levothyroxine that makes me dizzy, too. I've had my labs balanced including iron, B12 (important for Levo to convert to T3) and still I experience this dizziness. At one time I was put on Cortef along w/Levo and dizziness went away completely. I was so thrilled. Then years later, the dizziness hit me again. We tried upping and lowering Cortef. My labs were showing high ACTH and Cortisol so I had to come off it completely and now I've been dealing with dizziness and fatigue for years again. I can't stand living like this. I feel this medication has taken my life from me. I can't enjoy anything. It feels like big pharma is playing a bad joke on me (and others by the looks of this discussion.) Doctor's don't help. Endos seem to be the worst. I've tried adding a little T3 Cytomel, and it helps, but I still deal w/the relentless daily dizziness. Cytomel clears my mind for a short time, but I can't take much. I know some people take all Cytomel and no Levo, but I can't. The Cytomel is just too strong. I have tried the NDT Natural called Naturethroid, and it made me feel so dizzy, too. I hate this. I truly don't want to live like this. I'm so miserable. I have to lay down most of the day. Do things, lay down, cook, lay down. I hate this life. It's no way to live.

RE: dizziness. Do you have a recliner or a lift chair? I find if I seep in my recliner, I don't have a problem with dizziness. that seems to ocurr, when getting up from a rest on the couch.
