Levothyroxine Sod / Losing Excess Weight
UpdatedIve been taking levothyroxine sod 0.125 for a long time now and managed to keep a stable weight. However, I am trying to drop more with cardio, weight training and a strict diet. My diet is much like a body builders diet by staying trim and lean. I have dropped 30 pounds in 6 months but i cannot go any further. A lot of it has to do with my diet... I am trying to find almost the perfect diet to help me succeed in losing more weight with Hypothyroidism. Is there anyone out there who has this knowledge?

Have you consulted your doctor? They would be the best person to advise you on how to do it in a safe and healthy manner.
Weight issues are a very common problem from both this medication and thyroid disorders.

You may find it helpful to keep a food diary for several weeks, that way you and your doctor can look at it and see if there are any problem areas.
Yes I have talked to my doctor. All he says is to continue doing cardio, weight training and eat healthy. I feel there is almost no hope. There has to be a way!!! In the mornings, I eat proteins or complex carbs with vegetables. After my workout, I eat more protein in order to keep the muscle. I also make sure to have fat intake as well. Fat is not your enemy, processed carbohydrates and sugar is, within reason. I also have had a lot of water weight and that has gone down due to me taking DIM (diindolylmethane), which gets rid of bad estrogen and keeps the good estrogen. Sometimes when you have a lot of fat in your body, your body will produce more estrogen than what it needs, which causes more water weight..
I'm on the same dose and also have trouble losing weight with the typical weightloss program. Regardless of activity level, my best result has come from eating oatmeal (whole grain old fashion rolled oats soaked and microwaved) with either a bit of honey or nothing on it. No meat, no eggs, no fruits or veggies; just oatmeal. Even if the next meal I need to eat is only 2 hours later and I eat regular foods for it, I fare a lot better than on any other kind of breakfast.
Note: I'm not much of a breakfast person and I hate oatmeal so I've tried all kinds of other recommended breakfast plans including other types of hot cereal and I don't get the same results from any of it.
Hello there, I too have a thyroid problem and have been doing a fitness and weight loss programme called Workout Box and its specifically designed to stop the body from going into a state of plateau with exercise. It could be that your body has got used to your workout and therefore doesnt shed the extra pounds.
Anyway, check it out, if you want on google. I can only say good things about this programme and the fact that the founder checks in with you every day to answer your questions. Its really good.
All the best to you.

Hi, ima 20 year old male. I am 6 feet 240, i have been big my whole life and was recently diagnosed with hypothyrodism. Im taking 50 mcg of synthroid and its nearing the 5 week mark, i feel better other than random hot flashes in foot , but the WEIGHT IS NOT COMING OFF. Any suggestions? I dont want to be big for the rest of my life and have been lifting weights just cant shed the fat, do people with hypo end up fat more often then regulars as they age? PLEASE HELP!!
I can only lose weight if i cut carbohydrates.I read somewhere that people with a hypothyroid do better on a lower carbohydrate diet plus i feel better with a lower carbohydrate diet.I hope this is helpful to you.
Yes there are foods that aggravate thyroid, they are called goitrogenic (or something close to that) and they include uncooked tomato and uncooked kale and uncooked tofu. Look it up. I avoided these like the plague while eating plant based and was able to correct my thyroid numbers and get myself into the normal range.
Absolutely! Dr abravenel's book the body type diet. Do the thyroid diet. I promise you that you will lose weight fast, feel more energy within 2 weeks, and keep weight off if you maintain somewhat of diet once you reach goal. I will not even consider another diet anymore. Best thing is that it makes sense. I have been on it twice and lost weight felt great. Problem is my own lack of self disciple. Gained weight back but not until completely blowing it for a year and a half. I
I have Hashimotos thyroiditis and HAD hypothyroid. Started out 182 pounds up and down in 2012 (highest about 186 I believe, I'm 5'6") been on levothyroxine for years to keep me stable. In 2013 after a seizure, I did some research, dropped red meat, milk products, granulated sugar and sweets replaced with local honey, eliminated breads to next to nothing using flat breads if I have to have it in a wrap or tortilla, started watching out for glutens, used real butter instead of fake and was told by doc to avoid fat free anything because the body doesn't recognize the list of substitutes and will hold it within the cells so he said eat chicken, fish, eggs, bacon, avocados, black beans, green spinach and kale, and all other GREEN veggies and carrots but not white. Eat all the raw fruit you can stand also. Zap half veggie, half fruit, dash cinnamon, tsp honey, dollop of yogurt, handful of frozen fruit and scoop of protein powder in silver bullet large cup. Eat 3 moderate meals also with fruit or something small every 3hrs in between like a foldover or yogurt to keep metabolism up. I weighed 119 this morning without exercise and am having to have my levothyroxine dose decreased gradually due to the better diet lacking red meat. Oh, I was allowed to add red meat back in on the 4th month but in moderation. I only eat it like once or twice a week! Plenty of iron from my supplements and veggies! I DO NOT EXERCIZE! Other than walking around at work, a few leaning lunges if I'm waiting on soup in the microwave lol. This was initially a diet to feed my brain after suffering a brain seizure/mini stroke, but research showed benefits to my thyroid. Bonus!
Re: Tal (# 5)
It seems you are on a very low dose of medication for your height and weight. I would discuss with your doctor.
