Levothyroxine Menopause/weight Gain?
UpdatedI had two radio-iodine treatments to kill my thyroid, which was extremely over active, approx. 6 yrs ago. I have been on Levthyroxine for about 5-1/2 yrs now and do not experience the things a lot of you are. No hair loss (I have very thick hair), no dizziness, panic attacks, etc. HOWEVER I am going through menopause now also (at 53) and can't lose weight, the insomnia is rather bad along with the night sweats. Could it be from menopause? I check my levels every 6 months with my Dr. as I recommend everyone to do. I'm going to ask him about Synthroid next time I'm in. He will not prescribe a higher dose than what I have now (112 mg) as he doesn't want the Levothyroxine to affect my joints/bones in the long run and my TSH levels he keeps on the higher side already. The weight is my biggest issue. I walk 6 miles, 3-5 nights a week, just completed a 1/2 marathon two days ago and didn't lose an ounce! Watch out for menopause ladies, because if you thought you had problems with your weight before you ain't seen nothin' yet! Good Luck everyone!!

Donna,
I was diagnosed w/ Graves Disease and subsequently had the same iodine treatment- now no thyroid function at all. I also had put on weight, but am a bit younger. My Dr insisted on brand name Synthroid only. Most Endocrinologists agree generics have many issues such ineffectiveness, horrible side effects etc. He also insisted on antidepressants for people having treatment. Thyroid issues effect all of these things. While I definitely did not lose weight, it helped. (btw, also a beta blocker will alliviate any heart palpitations. About three years ago I had some tests to check my pituitary function, and was put on HGH to supplement. Immediately I felt more "normal" and dropped the weight instantly. Over 100lbs in 8 mos. It has been a lifesaver. Just might be worth checking into... Good luck.
Your issue could actually be due to a combination of the Levothyroxine, since it has been known to cause weight gain as a side effect in some people that take it, and menopause.
The FDA lists other side effects of Levothyroxine as possibly including diarrhea, fever, sensitivity to heat, and leg cramps.
