Losartan Hct Equiv For Benicar Hct Dosage
UpdatedHusband, 64, is being switched to Losartan. I am concerned b/c of trying to match correct dose. Benicar dose was 20/12.5, Losartan will be 100/12.5. (haven't taken yet) From what I've read, the 50/12.5 sounds more like it -or should he request to take 50mg 2ce a day? I'm going to contact Dr regarding this, but thought I'd get some input from you experts first so I'll know what to ask and how.
Other concern is he is dx'd with Afib and HBP and is on a slew of other meds: prazosin, nisoldipine, flecainide, metoprolol and just added digoxin. We're trying to avoid sudden drop in BP with this Losartan adjustment. Any recommendations? Thanks

I honestly wouldn't recommend trying to compare and match dosages between two different drugs whether they treat the same symptoms or not. Reason being is that the patient can & usually does end up responding differently to each medication. In the way of side effects and efficacy, this isn't always a good thing. I'd still follow through with contacting the doctor on that one, just to play it safe. He probably knows what doses are best based on his medical records and other health related factors.
Regarding your concerns about managing blood pressure, I think it would be wise to consider going the natural route with treatment (usually based on dietary habits); such as avoiding high sodium and eating more foods that are rich in potassium and magnesium (fresh fruits and veggies). This way you won't ever have to be concerned about taking so many pills. By all means don't stop taking the medication unless you get the sense that eating right is really working on it's own. But it may be worth trying, if not but for long term health benefits.
I hope this advice helps!
Thank you David. You made very good recommendations and it follows what our doctor said. She told us that the Losartan is a completely different type of drug and she felt comfortable that he would not have a problem on that dosage. He has experienced difficulty with some of the drugs - most recently digoxin. (Waking up with a pounding heart) but he has found that if he takes it at bed time instead of in the morning it does help control symptoms better.
Your points on lifestyle changes are well taken. He has cut back on salt, eats more fruits and veggies (because I do!) and is now exercising. I hope he can reach a point that he can cut out some of these meds. Every time we see the Dr., they seem to add more, not less - that scares me. The more meds - the more chance for error and its harder to control. But your comments tells me we're on the right track. Thank you.
