Just Started Estrogel And Have Some Questions
UpdatedI just turned 50; been having terrible night sweats for past 3-5 years. Last year I had a uterine ablation/removal of polyps, so have not had my period for almost a year (yeah!). However I am probably periodically ovulating. More recently have been having waves of panic. My obgyn put me on estrogel (1pump at night) and prometrium 10 days ago. She said If I still have night sweats after 1 week, take 2 pumps of the estrogel. My question are 1) is it normal to have abdominal cramping on/off while taking estrogel? and if not, should I still increase to 2 pumps since the night sweats have not changed? 2) When I had my hormone levels checked last year my estradiol was 122; is this too high to be taking estrogel? I would appreciate any words of wisdom here. Thanks.

Just curious. Did your abdominal cramping stop? and night sweats? Did they test your FSH level when you thought you were still ovulating? Usually pain with ovulation comes from the right side or left side...whichever ovary is trying to kick an egg loose. The abdominal pain on the heels of having uterine polyps is what I kept thinking about. Not knowing the rest of your history. Did your GYN ultimately do a total hysterectomy? Because if your FSH was high enough to be sure that you were post-menopausal, then I'd be concerned about that uterus, especially at the age of 51. Age-wise, chances of cervical cancer is very low. But uterine or even ovarian is right in the zone. I hope you were just experiencing a new balance in your post-menopausal life. Some women continue to have night sweats the rest of their lives. I'm not sure what your doctor's goal was and what she was treating with all those hormones. I don't know if it had something to do with your post-op uterine polyp issue or not. But if she is comfortable and YOU are comfortable that there's nothing else going on. I would think prempro once a day would be a good balanced replacement. I'm 53 and take a very small dose, and it did wonders. I have my CA-125 checked yearly to reasonably rule out ovarian cancer, have a pap smear every year and mammo. And I am feeling great. Just be sure to listen to your body, educate yourself, ask questions. And second opinions shouldn't offend your GYN. If anything, if the second doc agrees with the your doc's assessment, it keeps her out of the hotseat if a malpractice suit came her way. Best of luck.
