Joint Pain With Atorvastatin

I have always had normal cholesterol but a year ago was diagnosed with a 40 percent blockage of carotid artery. I started taking atorvastatin 20 mg and this past March my new doc raised it to 40 mg. A month ago I started getting joint pain all over. My internist ran blood tests and I was negative for Lyme and RA. However, blood tests showed some indication I have inflammation possibly related to some form of arthritis. I will be seeing a rheumatologist very soon. Could atorvastatin be the cause?

Hello, Isabel! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain.

And yes, these statin medications are very well known for causing joint and muscle pain as a side effect. In some cases, it's been so severe that the people had to stop taking the medication. Thus, there's a good chance it could be from the Atorvastatin.

The FDA lists its other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness and headache.
