I had to do a bit of digging around to get a more complete listing of ingredients. I found this from 2 different labelers (both of which appear to be owned by MEDA): Wallace Pharmaceuticals (NDC 51525-6831), and Alaven Pharmaceutical (68220-131). In both cases the active ingredients are listed as:
- Polyethylene Glycol 3350
- Potassium Chloride
- Sodium Bicarbonate
- Sodium Chloride
I then visited the manufacturer's web page and could not find any other inactive ingredients listed, but it did say in their prescriber information PDF " TRILYTE is a white powder for reconstitution containing 420 g polyethylene glycol 3350, 5.72 g sodium bicarbonate, 11.2 g sodium chloride, 1.48 g potassium chloride. Flavor packs, each containing 3.22 g of flavoring ingredients, are attached to the 4 liter bottle. See individual flavor packs for complete listing of ingredients. "
So luckily I managed to find more details about the ingredients of each flavor packet through product label images over at the NIH.gov and they are listed as:
Lemon Lime: natural and artificial lemon lime powder, hypromellose, Prosweet® Powder Natural, saccharin sodium, colloidal silicone dioxide.
Pineapple: hypromellose, artificial pineapple flavor powder, Manga Sweet™, saccharin sodium, colloidal silicone dioxide.
Citrus Berry: hypromellose, artificial citrus berry powder, saccharin sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide.
Cherry: hypromellose, artificial cherry powder, saccharin sodium, colloidal silicone dioxide.
Orange: hypromellose, natural and artificial orange powder, saccharin sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide.
So for the most part those ingredients to appear to be gluten free, although it does not specifically state what goes into their "natural and artificial" flavoring powders (in addition to the fact that they appear to use flavor masking ingredients such as ProSweet® and Manga Sweet™) - so I cannot say for sure.
According to Virginia Dare (the ProSweet® manufacturer), "Prosweet® can be used to mask bitterness, soy notes, protein bitterness, vitamins, minerals, non-nutritive sweeteners, amino acids, pharmaceutical actives, and botanicals in beverage, nutritional product and pharmaceutical applications. Virginia Dare’s masking flavors are available in liquid and dry, Natural, All Natural, Natural and Artificial, non-GMO, and Organic Compliant forms to meet all your requirements." Their PDF sell sheet says "Virginia Dare’s masking flavors are available in liquid and dry, Natural, All Natural, Natural and Artificial, non-GMO, and Organic Compliant forms to meet all your requirements." So I am not sure whether their "Natural" products contain gluten.
As for the hypromellose, wikipedia states "Hypromellose (INN), short for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used as an ophthalmic lubricant, as well as an excipient and controlled-delivery component in oral medicaments, found in a variety of commercial products... As a food additive, hypromellose is an emulsifier, thickening and suspending agent, and an alternative to animal gelatin."
Unfortunatley in the case of the Manga Sweet™, I could not find more information on it.
So all in all we have a fair amount of information here, but to get a definite YES or NO about any gluten, one may need to have an actual lab analysis performed on the product, or perhaps the manufacturers could say for sure? I would have liked to provide a 100% answer, but I at least hope this helps provide some leads. If you or anyone else ends up gather more details or finding out for sure, please add that information to this thread for everyone to benefit!
