Tommy,

I don't know your situation and why it was prescribed.

Here is what I do know. In September, 2005, my dad (88 years old) was diagnosed with Chronic Mylegenous Leukemia. The wonder drug that we were trying to get at the time was Gleevec which we were told had made significant medical breaththroughs in this type of cancer. However, my dad had no RX plan and it cost $1,432 (discounted) and we were waiting for a response from the distributor if we could get help in getting it. While we were waiting, my dad was prescribed Hydroxyuerea and he was taking 1000 mg twice per day for about 2-1/2 weeks when he, himself, refused all medication after being diagnosed with stomach cancer and knowing that there was no hope for him with that due to his age, medical history, etc. and so he felt it was no use fighting the leukemia which was slow-progressing over the other.

What I do know, and I can't say if it is specifically from this drug because dad was on so many drugs around that time that it was scary for me to have to prepare them and administer them every day, but I did notice that, while they made him drowsy and sleep, it was not a drowsiness where he could actually rest well. He would be extremely restless or agitated and turn back and forth, feeling worn out after sleep. He complained of being sick in his stomach after taking them, but I cannot say with any certainty it was from that because, like I said, he was on other meds and given his diagnosis. I can tell you with certainty this. Once my dad stopped on his own ALL MEDS, I thought he would die immediately. After all, he needed his heart meds, blood pressure meds, this and that, blah blah, but once he stopped, he rested much better, actually slept straight through most nights, etc. His doctor estimated he might be with us for Thanksgiving 2005 but unable to enjoy it. I worked very hard to keep him with us as long as possible, but pain-free. He enjoyed Thanksgiving, spent Christmas and even New Year's, 2006, before he did, on his own, finally give up. We lost him on Feb. 2, 2006... but, peacefully.

This experience with my dad has made me looks at the use of medications in a different light. There are wonder drugs out there. I guess the thing doctors can't know as each person is different and these drugs are man made is how they will work for you. This has made me a little more skeptical of the abundance of medication more than a single medication prescribed.

I hope your situation or that of your loved one improves with the use of this drug or alternative ones.
