Is Taking Methadone After Subutex Safe?
UpdatedHello my name is kev. I have been consuming about 3 to 6 mg of Subutex daily for about 7 months. I'm very eager to eliminate the Subutex and start on these Methadone. Is it safe to consume Methadone 20 mgs the day after taking about 3 mgs of Subutex? I heard Suboxone was the dangerous one, not Subutex and I also heard the taking Methadone after Subutex is safe apposed to Methadone to Subutex. Any answers would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

People are just stupid. The buprenorphine is what keeps you from feeling high on other full opiates. The naloxone is only in the suboxone to keep you from misusing the drug. If taken properly the naloxone will not affect you. noone seems to understand that subutex is just as useful for opiate w/d as suboxone and it is the active ingredient Buphrenorphine that is the blocker and helps you get thru w/d. Doctors only give subutex to patients they can trust not to misuse the pills. The naloxone is only a safety net to keep people from abusing suboxone aka bup.
@kev,
Just for added confirmation, you should probably discuss this with your doctor as well. However, patients in the following discussion thread who allegedly have personal experience switching from one to the other (particularly post #12), imply that methadone (opiates/opioids) "after" subutex is safe and may only turn out to be a waste of pills if taken too soon...but the other way around could throw you into a state of precipitated withdrawal if subutex being taken too soon after methadone:

I'm not making any claims here, but rather just sharing what others have believed to be true from their personal accounts with these two medications.
Hope this helps!
You're stupid, you didn't answer the question! You just talked about the components of the drugs. Not helpful at all.
Hi Kev! I'm wondering if you ended up taking the Methadone after having been on the Subutex after so many hours. I'm trying to find out something similar. I've been over 12 hours now without my Subutex,( not Suboxone) so I'm wondering if I'll go into withdrawal if I take 20 mg of Methadone. I've seen so many conflicting answers and recommendations, so I'm curious what you ended up doing. Thank you! Hope you're well!
Re: Carebear (# 4)
Taking methadone after subutex will not put you into precipitated withdrawals. You may not feel the full effects of the methadone but it definitely won’t put you in withdrawal.
Re: J (# 5)
Thank you. I didn't think so, but I haven't taken Methadone in years, so I wanted to be safe. I've taken opiates after surgery along with the Subutex, but with Methadone being different, I didn't want to start withdrawaling, since I've seen so many conflicting arguments. I appreciate it.
Re: Carebear (# 6)
You’re welcome! I feel your frustrations lol, so many contradicting answers on this and other websites. Hope everything worked out good for you. If you could post back with your experience after taking the methadone, maybe it could help other people answer their concerns.
Re: J (# 7)
Hi J! Right? So absolutely frustrating! Lol. So, I had been without the Subutex for about 14 hours and took 20 mg of Methadone and I was just fine, like you said. I didn't feel the Methadone per se, which you also mentioned might be the case, but I definitely didn't go into withdrawal at all. It's been about 24 hours now since I took the Methadone, and I've taken my Subutex a bit ago and feel fine as well. Hopefully sharing this will help anyone else with the same questions, or concerns. I was on Methadone for several years, weaned off and have been on Subutex for a few years now. I appreciate your response, and thank you again! ??????
Hello, Kev! How are you?
Yes, Suboxone contains Naloxone, along with Buprenorphine, so it neutralizes other narcotics and taking it too close to having taken others could throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. However, Subutex only contains the Buprenorphine.
The FDA lists these as being narcotic analgesics, so they have the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
However, as to when to start it, you should follow your doctor's instructions.
