Is Taking Augmentin For 30 Days For A Staph Infection A Risk Factor?

My brother contracted cellulitis while hospitalized for hernia surgery three months ago. He was recently prescribed Augmentin to take twice a day for thirty days. Is that an unusually long time to take an antibiotic? Are there increased risk factors from taking it that long?

Hello, Paula! How is you brother doing?

No, the risks remain the same as if he were taking it for 7 to 10 days, he runs the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Sometimes, with a particularly bad infection, such as severe cellulitis, it is necessary to take a longer course of antibiotics and he should follow his doctor's instructions.

Is there anything else I can help with?
