My mother is on the 50 mcg patch for cancer pain. I'm not sure how anyone could die from handling the patch. I handle them all the time and never had any effects from it. The dosage and makeup of the patch is for it to be released/absorbed by the skin over 72 hours, but for my mom, pain relief begins to significantly taper off after 48 hours. Hospice wanted to try her on morphine but it didn't work (just like I told them it wouldn't) and it makes her delirious. I put one patch on her back, heated it to take effect quicker and if it doesn't kick in soon, I will cut the last patch up in 8 smaller pieces and let her chew one. Nothing worse than seeing someone you love in severe pain & not being able to stop it. All of the people who abuse this drug should be beaten until they really need it. It is such a time consuming ordeal to get the patches for her because of all the regulations on dosage, how many she can be prescribed, having to pick up a hard copy prescription, going to different pharmacies when most don't have it in stock, etc etc all because of the damn addicts and junkies.

I am a 55 year old grandpa that this summer was taking care of my gbabies and my 100 mcg fent patch on a 98 degree day caused me to overdose. So if this happened just because I had a 3 day and a new one on, which was stupid, chewing a 50 can cause your respiratory system to stop. By the time the ems got to me my % of oxygen in my system was below 55%. So listen, if you cant take your meds the way they are perscribed dont take them at all. All people like you do is cause people who really need pain meds to not be able to get them.

To chew Fentanyl or inject the squeezing of a patch will increase tolerance if not kill yourself thus the more and more Fentanyl one will need and eventually an overdose will occur and if one lives neurologist (brain) damage can occur and as stated death is a definite possibility. Also the abuse ruins the use for people who use Legit. as Doctors may be reluctant to prescribe for people who are in severe pain and use properly so it just not oneself your hurting abusers ruin it for so many. If one wishes a high go to a back ally not a Pharmacy after lying to a Doctor.

Your kidding right? So what your saying is go ahead and chew it as you need faster pain relief, yet, talk with your doctor so he knows and can work with you on the amount. 1st off, if a doctor knows if you're chewing them, the patient and Dr will not be on the same page and the Dr will kick you off the patch and any other opiate your on. Why? Because people don't chew patches to get "faster relief." They chew them for the intense high one feels, IF they don't die from chowing all 3 day's worth of medicine in 1 shot. 2nd, if one is on fentanyl, it is for long term, round the clock, pain relief for up to 72 hour's. Hence, why doctors give an immediate release opiate as well, for the pain that comes (breakthrough pain) during that 72 hour period. So, if your not getting proper pain relief from the fentanyl, there are other long term pain meds one can try. And one is to use the immediate release pain meds for exactly that, acute onset of pain. There is NO justification for chewing a patch, claiming you do it for faster onset of pain relief. Go ahead and tell your doctor that. Let us know how that worked out for you. Again, chewing Fentanyl is done for 1 reason and 1 reason only. I just came across this thread and I know it's dated quite some time ago. However, I had to respond to this post for the patient that is contemplating chewing a patch for an intense high you will never feel again. You will be chewing more and more just to achieve the same feeling you felt the 1st time. Your tolerance will skyrocket and if your still alive, you will needs so much of the drug per day just to have the ability to function. When you can't get your hands on Fentanyl, you will need so much of your break though pain every 4 hours to stave off horrific withdrawal. Then your out of that 30 day script in 5-6 days. Then what? Your heading down a road of no return and for what?

I am so sorry for your loss. I just lost my youngest son one day after his 30th. birthday. He found my prescription fentanyl 75 mg patches. I found him dead in my bathroom the next morning. I truly believe he did not intentionally want to kill himself because he had a 4 year old daughter that was his life. I believe he was just looking for that high not knowing how dangerous fentanyl really is.As a mom , I feel so guilty . I should have hid them from him ! Please, think twice before abusing this dangerous drug. I would give anything to bring my baby back and my granddaughter's daddy back !

Good chance it will kill you or at least knock you out unless you are already on high doses of other opiates.

It's made in a laboratory then a jell is added with other particulates to be absorbed through the skin over a long period of time - sudden ingestion could be fatal!

I have the 50mcg patches and i chew them. Only i wear it on my skin and cut off small strips at a time. You'd be incredibly stupid to chew an entire 50mcg/h patch without doing a simple google search on Fentanyl. You nearly lost your life and caused a traumatic experience for your wife for no reason, you could have easily found info on chewing patches before eating the whole damn thing. Even chewing half a patch is crazy dangerous. In the future, don't go abusing the most powerful narcotic in the world without ANY research. It's people like you that cause pain patients like me to have to deal with the insane bulls*** hoops and aggravation of just being able to get these meds. The pharmacy told me recently that they're going to start making people return all their used patches to the pharmacy to make sure they're not abusing or selling them. Don't be a dingus!

Most of these people are chronic opiate abusers and asking for info to try and use as carefully and with as much information as possible. These people are going to abuse opiates regardless because of very intense long withdrawals. While i don't condone abuse, it is a helpful option for these people to do it as carefully and informed as possible. Ideally they will seek treatment which is mainly limited to methadone and suboxone and the idea is to monitor ur usage and bring u down safely and underneath a drs care.

I meant we shouldn't judge what a drug will do to another as in...that it CAN kill them..Idk if it came out strange but I meant we shouldn't tell people it's OK to do these drugs when it CAN kill them...I was saying I know what I am tolerant of but not what others are tolerant of...if u were texting about my post anyways lol...I'm with ya...we shouldn't say what they will or won't do..if u look back on my posts I've always said that...

You couldn't be more wrong. Just because a dr. Prescribes them doesn't mean you won't die cause your opiate tolerant. The system delivers the medication in 72 hour's when worn. Chew it instead and your getting all three days worth of medicine at once. And yes, opiate tolerant can and do die. Fentanyl is the strongest of all opiates. 100x more potent than Morphine. It's nothing to play with. Don't mislead soneone to believe because their dr. Legitimately prescribes them that they won't die!

SI sorry for your loss..I feel the same..it's not the best idea to come on a forum and say go for it you'll be fine. It just sends out the wrong message. And we arnt all made up the same. Some people don't take well to potent drugs and just because some can doesn't mean loss of life doesn't happen.I agree to just maybe watch what u say for people on the fence or looking to see if I do this will it be ok. And they see oh yeah go ahead you'll be fine. Is just not safe. I know what I can do. But I can't and others shouldnt judge what some drug will do to another. Again sorry.

my 18 year old step son died this morning from chewing a fentanyl patch. maybe before posting stupid responses saying its OK to chew on these things u should stop and think of the young kids who are on the internet searching and experimenting with drugs. just a thought...and be sure u guys are keeping your rxs away from your children and their friends. wouldn't want another young life gone due to someone being irresponsible with their drugs. my response. DO NOT PUT THESE PATCHES IN YOUR MOUTH. YOU CAN DIE FROM IT. god bless you all.

I hope you chose not to chew/cheek the patch. I want to share my experience here in hopes that it will help you and others that are considering this. I was prescribed Fentanyl for a back injury, but it was taking awhile for it to kick in by wearing on the skin. I made the mistake of looking up how to make it kick in faster than wearing it. I started cutting into the patches and putting a drop of the gel into my gums, which was very effective for awhile. The problem is, in NO TIME at all, your tolerance will go through the roof. For example, the first time I did this, a drop slightly smaller than a pea was perfect for me. Within a month, it was taking 3-4 drops at a time, which was about half of a 100mcg patch - which I had seen in other forums, people have DIED on this amount. Long story short, the next 3 years have been a fight for my life as my habit grew to needing 2 full patches a day. I have overdosed twice, the last time I was unconscious for about 2 1/2 hrs and they almost had to put me on a ventilator. I have been clean for 6 months now thanks to rehab, a loving family, and a massive daily dose of Suboxone, but the long term damage Fentanyl does to your brain chemistry is staggering. (even if it's not all physiological = some can be mental, emotional, etc) I STILL have a very difficult time feeling joy in everyday life, and sometimes it's almost a full time job just fighting the urge to return to the Fentanyl. And let me tell you - withdrawal from this is HORRIBLE. It's a fast acting drug, which makes the initial withdrawal usually only a few VERY MISERABLE days, but for me, it's been the extreme post-acute withdrawal that is worse. At almost 50 days clean, it hit me in a wave that as so strong it made me throw up. The doctor said I will have weeks at a time that may be great, but that I can expect up to 2 years of getting small recurring bouts of sickness like this. He has been right so far. Also, Fentanyl being at the top of the "food chain" so to speak, it makes other pain meds almost completely in-effective. I found this out when I had a procedure done on my back finally. They gave me 3 shots of Dilaudid in the hospital and it didn't touch my mind OR my pain. I should have been fast asleep, and instead I walked out of there on my own two feet with ALL of my pain and wits about me. For goodness sake, please don't get involved with Fentanyl unless you are sure you'll never have to come off it.

I have the same patches, if you don't have a tolerance, chewing a half patch that is brand new will probably kill you. I chew 1/5th - 1/4 patch at a time. Lower size if i haven't worn it and it's a fresh one. I suggest putting the patch on your skin and peeling up a small bit at a time and chewing on that while you still have the patch on your skin to release the drug gradually so as to not make it SO strong. Plus you WILL become an addict. You'll be physically addicted within literally under a week. Be careful with these, even if you have a high tolerance/experience with opioids. it is extremely powerful and addictive. Don't be cocky. And certainly don't eat a half at once. That's 4mg you're taking at once, that can easily cause an OD. Tread lightly. good luck

I agree with Barry. I am a nurse and I used to be on pain management for years which left me opiates dependent. I used methadone to get off of opiates altogether. But I find it impossible to believe any one has died from touching a Fentanyl patch! I've applied hundreds and hundreds of them in my 21 years as a nurse and I have never once felt any kind of effect. I have chewed pieces of a Fentanyl patch a time or two and while it felt wonderful, I would never recommend doing this because there is no way to determine the dose you are ingesting and that could be deadly! Good luck to all who use opiates prescribed by their own doctor for themselves and for those of you who are dabbling in recreational opiate use, STOP!!!
