I've been prescribed fentanyl 50mg pain patches and i was just wondering if it's okay to cut one in half an chew on it?

Hydrocodone, as of today 5/27/13 is a Schedule III controlled substance. In January, a subcommittee in the FDA recommended that hydrocodone be rescheduled into a Schedule II drug. So far it has NOT been rescheduled. Hydrocodone is only available in the USA as a combination product - mixed with Tylenol, aspirin or ibuprofen. IF there were a hydrocodone only product it would be Schedule II. But there is no such product yet. FDA is in process of reviewing a couple of products that contain hydrocodone alone. Nothing has been approved yet.

Punky - It's blatantly obvious to anyone who reads any one if your rambling ranting posts that you are HIGH AS A KITE while you're writing. You have so much displaced anger and you're ABUSING not using fentanyl. Whether or not you want to face it, your conduct reveals that you have a severe drug addiction.

Kevin.......I think you are out of line. Punky is telling people not to use Fentanyl any way other than recommended.

What he does....right or wrong is his own business.

I use Fentanyl patches and do not and would not recommend using them any other way than directed.

We can not judge anyone's pain level.....no Dr would. The Dr's would not approve but they would not judge a patients pain level. To call someone an addict when you have no idea is so wrong.

Hey Punky, I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a hard time with your pain and pain meds. Have you tried oxymorphone or levorphanol? They are the only meds to really help with my combat wounds. Ask your md about them. Best of luck.

Be carfully with this patch around young children some how my 15 month old son got it into his system and died , the patch was never found . I have yo live with this forever . Shane on the doctors for not warning me of the dangers . I plan to take legal action . I hope this post can save a life !

People like you are part of the reason that good medical care is so expensive and hard to get in the U. S. I am sorry for your loss, but if I was on the jury I would find in favor of the Dr. Did you not read the info that came with your meds? I doubt that the Dr. and pharmacy didn't tell you about the dangers, just as I doubt that you don't know how the patch got in your child's hands. Sorry, your story reads like B.S. to me.

FYI a lot of these patches were recalled for falling off and due to accidental death as well . check the site yourself .No I was not warned by my doctor or pharmacy . To think I might have thought something this tragic could EVER happen is just ridicious . I suffer from M.S. and the fentanyl patch was given to me from my pain doctor with out any info and sorry u could think such a thing about calling my story B.S. is just sick to me !!!!!! I'm just here to ask people to be extremely carfully with this medicine !!!!!!!

What dose of Fentanyl were you given and what brand name?

The patches are very dangerous if they are not where they should be. Handling of them should be very carefully done.

The packaging and information for the use as well as how dangerous Fentanyl is documented quite well.

I know that some brands have had issues with tchem sticking. I have been on Fentanyl patches for almost ten years.

@judge and Lu, yes, I know the patches can fall off, in 7 years of using them AS directed I have had 1 fall off and I knew within minutes that it had. What I take objection to is Lu's statement that she wanted to sue. To me that is the way you try to pass blame for something that is either your fault or no ones fault, just an accident. I also just don't believe that no one spoke to you about the dangers, most pharmacy's have a spot you have to sign stating that you are refusing the right to speak with the pharmacist . The patches come packaged with instructions of use and proper disposal. They clearly state the patches are dangerous to children, pets and caregivers. They state on the outside of the package that they are only to be used on opioid tolerate patients. They also state on the outside of the package to keep out of reach of children and pets. How many warnings can they give? As I said I am sorry for your loss but how us it the Dr's fault, how does suing him, the pharmacy or maker going to help? It only makes it harder for those who need pain meds to get their meds as all the good Dr's are afraid of being sued for things they have no control over. They could just leave us in pain.

@nobody unfortunely my pharmacy did not do the Required education on the product:( And my sister-in-law who was my primary doctor said nothing either. You're right it was an accident I just want people to realize how serious and harmful it can be . When I asked the pharmacist about the patch he stated this is a good one So much for him giving me the education. I just hope other doctors will sit down and discuss the issues with the patient first and make them sign paperwork. I also found out my patch was recalled for falling off. Maybe they need to be make a better adhesive Or some kind of covering for the patch. My assumption is that it must have fallen off and somehow attached to my son I will never truly know since they did not find the patch. I have to live with it forever .

I had two patches come off in the tub. I always dry out the tub with a towel and never noticed them transfer to the towel. I realized that something was wrong when I started going through withdrawel 48 hours later. My hubby looked on my back and they were gone. I found them on the towel in the laundry.

patchs are being made better now but we still can have skin reactions, improper application or just a bad patch and they could fall off. It is our responsibility to read instructions, read warnings and take responsibility for all medications we use. It is our responsibility to follow, the manufacturers responsibility, to inform us of all dangers etc.

Maybe if they are sued they will produce a patch that does not fall off, its the manufacturer that needs to improve the patch, They fall off all the time, how is reading any instructions going to prevent them falling off, and for a doctor to give someone a patch without even discussing the dangers with the patient, well they should not be a doctor and I would sue them until they couldn't afford insurance so they cant kill others.
When i was given the patch I was read the riot act by my doctor also the pharmacist that filled my prescription, what doctor just tells a patient this is good without instruction

Judge, do you use patches? We know they fall off on ocassion but still use them. If we still use them knowing the risks then how can it be anyone else's fault if injury. If we sue it solves nothing just increases costs etc.

I agree with u 100 percent. If a person wants to use they will and if they can't get it one place they will find it somewhete else. I kniw also. I was addicted to loratab pain pills and still crave them even now that I have stopped using them. Also xanax. That is one addictive pill! U feel like your skin is crawling trying to come off them. I had to back off them a little at a time.

I know this is an old topic, but I would like to point out that I am trying currently to get clean and I refuse to buy any more drugs. I am going to a detox facility in two days, and when I get there I need to have something in my system (opiates) when I check in. The only form of drug I have right now is an old 50mcg patch that had been worn for maybe 10 hours. I took it off bc it was making me ill, but yesterday in the worst of my WD I placed the used patch between my gums and my cheek and held it for 15 minutes or so, and suddenly my restlessness and sweating diminished. I tried it again today, with somewhat weaker results, but results non-the-less. At least I had something to keep me from being "sick" until I can get professional medical help. I do know that 15 minutes, even with a used patch, really did the trick. I can't imagine ever chewing an un used patch. I can understand how people have died doing so. Very sad. But as someone else said on here, most people who use are not stupid, and they know their limits. I'm just happy to not be sweating and achy anymore.

Mr. Bogit, I have had much the same symptoms and problems and the best thing I ever did was go to a pain specialist. The fentanyl patch is a lifesaver. Also, Lyrica for nerve pain. I still take Oxy for breakthrough pain and muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories, but the patch and the Lyrica are really helping and I see an improvement in my pain. I've had 4 spinal surgeries and have the spinal stimulator implanted.
