Is Oxycontin The Same As Ms Contin?
UpdatedMy best friend, who introduced me to her surgeon that performed my 360 fusion, was recently forced to return to PM due to pain from numerous back problems including but not limited to Bone spurs, bulging discs, curvature of the spine and more..., Her PM clinic is about an hour away from mine. Anyhow, he had her on Oxycodone 15 MG IR 4 times a day and he recently added Oxycontin 30mg ER twice a day due to her not having much relief from just the 15 mg pills. It made all the difference in her level of pain and I had my friend back :) When she went to fill at the pharmacy (CVS) she has always used due to them being next door to the clinic, she was told she would have to go to a pharmacy in her county (next exit down) as could no longer fill for her out of county (we are in TN and first we are hearing of the county rule). So she went to a pharmacy that she used when she did not have insurance as they are cheaper than others. She was told they only had the generic Oxycontin and she said that was fine (She has Blue Cross/Blue Shield Ins). The pills were very different looking but still a purple so she assumed they were the generic Oxycontin. She complained to me that she was not getting the same amount of relief as she had previously. She then said the pill bottle last month says Oxycontin 30mg 2 times a day and this time it says Morphine Sulfate 30 mg 2 times a day. Are the MS 30 the same as the Oxycontin 30? from what i have found on the web it appears they are 2 different drugs AND more importantly, if she is to have the same strength as what the Dr prescribed her in the Oxy than it should be a higher strength in the MS? I feel bad for her hurting the way she is when she was doing so well last month :( Thanks for any input/explanation

You are correct, they are two different medications.
The Oxycontin contains the active ingredient Oxycodone and there is no generic on the market for it. The MS Contin contains the active ingredient Morphine.
You are also correct on the dosing, Oxycodone is 1 and a half times stronger than Morphine, so if she was taking 30mgs of Oxycontin, the should need 45mgs of the time released Morphine for it to be equivalent.
The type of substitution the pharmacy did here is not allowed, without doctor's approval and she needs to contact her doctor and the pharmacy to complain about it.

Is there anything else I can help with?
Well, they couldn't have given her OxyContin (extended release oxycodone) 30 mg. because they don't exist. Only Roxicodone (rapid release oxycodone) comes in 15 mg and 30 mg strengths. As Verwon said, morphine and oxycodone are two different opioids. They have similar effects and strengths, with oxycodone tending to be the more euphoric and abusable of the two when taken orally. Up until recently OxyContin and MS-Contin used two different types of delivery systems. OxyContin's formula was much more easily defeated to allow insufflation or injection. I've heard that this has changed though and they are both using a release system like binding the ingredients into hypromellose.
Are you sure 30mg time released OxyContin don't exist?? Cause I'm looking at some right now
