Is Oxycodone Stronger Than Morphine?
UpdatedI just want to know which drug works the best Oxycodone or Morphine. I was switched from Oxy to Morphine. Was taking Oxy 10/325 and now take 30 mg of the Morphine.
Hi, Jojo! How are you feeling on the Morphine?
Oxycodone is actually one and a half times stronger than Morphine, so for each 10mgs of Oxycodone you'd need 15mgs of Morphine to be equivalent.
So, by being switched to 30mgs of Morphine, you're actually on a higher dosage.
It is also a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation and drowsiness.
Learn more Morphine details here.
Is there anything else I can help with?
I seem to be doing ok on the morphine it isn't making me groggy like they Oxy did which I am very pleased about.
Thank you very much for your help.
See, Im a perc gal. I've tried em all. however, I do believe its body tolerant. when i run out of percs, I take Norcos. however, i do go through a witdraw from the Norco when i go back on the percs. morphine just makes me tired. Plain vicoden, makes me sorta wired. I just finished a 5 day call on morphine, my house is a mess, just felt blah, no umph..
I'm taking oxycodone 10/325 4*/day as well as morphine 30mg slow release 2*/day I've been taking this dose for over a year now nod doesn't work for me anymore. What would be a stronger medication I can talk with my doctor about?
Thanks
Oxys are as addictive asMorphine, so what's the difference which one you take.? This question is regarding which is stronger.! Anyone taking either of these Drugs would know that.!!! I am taking 10mg of Opana (MS Contin) for a second day, and it will take some time to work; wich in my case will be up to 30 mg's B.ID. I think I am going to have a good outcome along with Vicodin 10mg for Breakthrough medication.I hope everyone is happy with the outcome of whatever medication works for you.
Steve
When you say Morphine are you talking about just Morphone or Oxymorphone... what is the diff if there is one?
Hi jo its tony, Find out what works 4 u & stick wit it cuz losing ur life aint worth it babe. hit me up {edited for privacy} peace !!!!
Wonder why they didn't give you 30 mg Oxycodone. ..that works better for me than morphine. Everybody is different. As I read and so many people on a lot of pain meds no one mentions anything on having an interthecal pump which is connected medtronics. It's placed by nuerosurgeon in the abdomen and the caters go into spinal cord which allows morphine. .hydrmorphone ir whatever tour of pain medication your dr. Feels works for you. With this I'm on less oral medication the medicine hitting right into the spine makes the sciatic nerve and other nerve damage better at least for me. Right now I fell n my catheter came undone and on like 10 30 mg a day ..hydrmorphone since pump is off..having terrible problems with insurance getting this amount. It's sad that a dr. Goes to college 4 yrs med school roughly 6..10 yrs specialty practicing 30 years has known you snd have been with you through all your shattered bones and a person behind a desk can say t you can't give your patient that much. Mine is a temporary situation I see nuerosurgeon to clean up pain drs. Mess after he attempted to put the catheter into spinal cord..nonetheless sorry for rattling on. But I hope all goes well for you.
Been taking percocet 5mg/325 every 4 hours or so ,it wasnt helping my morning pain which was off the charts and needed to be dealt with by time release morphine but primed with ambien to get me to sleep..havent had any issues with the ambien except when i dont sleep then im twice as tired..this morphine is the first pain drug to halt my morning pain ive ever used.if you havent tried time release ask you doctor...its the best option if your getting severe pain 3-4 or 5-8 hours after going to sleep..my pill supposed to last 12 hours or so, i drink coffee to boost all the pain i take,,i wonder how long morphine will last at this level before i get used to it and have to bump ?
My name is Erin. I take oxys 30mil. And I thought morphine was stronger than oxys? I've been on 30's for ever it seems of course mil. count cause it says 10 mil. of oxys to be the same amount as a 15 mil. morphine. I'm confused which works better. I used to be on the purple capsules of morphine. I think they were 30 mil. I also didn't know there were dif. capsules and tablets cause I got a 15 mil. white tablet of morphine and I didn't feel any different what so ever. Are the capsules stronger than the tablet??? Is my 30'mil. tablets of oxys stronger than a 30 mil. tablet or a 30 mil. tablet of morphine?? #confused consumer!!
The ten milligram oxycodone
in my opinion is equal to a thirty milligram morphine I get perscibed em both and I'd take a ten mg Oxy over thirty milligrams of morphine any day it's a sleepy type of pill and to me fifteen milligrams of hydrocodone equal that thirty milligram morphine once again I get thirty milligram morphines and orally they are as weak as they get I hate running out of my fifteen milligram pervs and taking that weak morphine ima see if they give me oxycontain for breakthrough pain or dilautin soon the morphine blows
I just want to say something from reading everybody's post so you have an understanding of pain meds, well the ones that everybody seems to be confused about. Percocet is oxycodone with Tylenol they have 5, 7.5, or 10mg mixed with Tylenol so it looks like this 5/325 or 10/325...Roxicodone comes in 5,10,15,20, and 30mg which is strait oxycodone with no Tylenol. OxyContin is Oxycodone continous release. So that comes in 10mg all the way to 10mg and supposedly lasts 12 hrs however I have always got my around the clock pain meds every 8 hrs and breakthrough 4-6 a day every 4 to 8hrs depending. Also your around the clock pain med every 8 hrs is so it overlaps and you stay good. Extended release pain meds are OxyContin, MS Contin(morphine), Exalgo (dilaudid extended release), Fetenynal patches, Zohydro(pure hydrocodone), Opana (oxymorphone) to name a few...breakthrough you have percocet(oxycodone with Tylenol), Roxicodone/oxycodone IR (pure oxycodone), vicodin/lortab/norco (hydrocodone with tylenol), Morphine, dilaudid, n they don't use it as much but u can get a mix of ibuprofen and vicodin...I think it's called microprofen or somethin like that....been in pain meds since my TBI in the military 5 yrs ago n in 2 bad car accidents since....I can't win...but long as u take prescribed u won't become addicted nor get a high...that's y there are rules, and u have a good Dr...good luck
You are very wrong about not becoming addicted MaddieJay. Flat out they are Opiates and your body will become addicted over time... Even if take exactly as prescribed. You also will build a tolerance.
Go ahead and stop taking any of your above listed meds and tells of you go through withdraw.
Maddiejay sorry hun but you are completely wrong about becoming addicted. Even if you only take the prescribed amount over time your body WILL develop a tolerance and you can become addicted. So the fact is abusing or taking as directed can both result in addiction because of the opiate in the medicine. Oh and oxycodone is stronger than morphine.
If you stay on the same dosage and not go up the pain medicine will continue to work just fine. Add a non narcotic med or massage, exercise, go to classes related to health and pain relief and try to get away from the notion you'll have to go up on the narcotics. The brain has a set number of opioid receptors and going up will cause more side effects. It's placebo if you believe a higher dose is working. Do all you can to get AWAY from narcotic pain relievers and in the long run your life will be much better. Never take an extra narcotic early or double it, no matter what. This is how tolerance develops. Stay on the same dose as prescribed and work downwards.
I use a mixture of both morphine and oxy....for me that works best....oxy may be stronger but doesn't last as long as morphine. ....for me
Yes, morphine is "clearer" feeling than oxycodone...But that's MY BODY. We're all wired differently. I'm also very pleased with morphine compared to oxycodone myself. Peace
There's no such drug as "morphone"! I want whatever youre on.

I was taken off oxycodone 10/325 and put on morphine 15 mg. Will I suffer withdrawal symptoms from the oxy?
I am currently on morphine 60 mg ER every 12 hrs )and Oxycodone 10 mg IR ( every 6 hrs) and have been for past 5 years. I have built up a tolerance because my medication is no longer working. I cannot be increased any stronger on these two meds together, as I am maxed out with state regulations. I want to try to go off morphine all together, so I plan on talking to my doctor about putting me on Oxycodone 30 mg IR only. The question is...how many Oxycodone 30 mg. Would be equivalent to the Morphine 60 mg ER -2×day and Oxycodone 10 mg-4×day ???
Yes, in some cases Oxy can have better pain control than morphine, depends on the patient. The oxy you listed is generic Percocet and those have Tylenol in them which can help with the pain. They usually use IRs for people that have trouble taking Tylenol, bad livers, ect.
rudy133334...its oxymorphone. Not morphone and I am on oxymorphone.
There is a drug called hydromorphone. I'm am currently on it. its a pill form of dilaudid.
Hello to all,
I was in a severe accident that left me with compound fractures all up right arm, a shattered wrist and my humerus bone went through my shoulder. I suffered from sciatica and it was made worse. L-4 and 7 fractures. Tendonitis developed in arm, hardware removed. Sévère Sciatic attacks. Loss of urine. Loss of balance. Pain is stabbing and taies my breath away. PM finally ordering an MRI. THEY REDUCED MY OXYCONTIN 10 FROM 4+ TO TWICE, PUT ME ON MS CONTIN 15×3 A DAY. STOPPED MY VALIUM, PUT ME ON LYRICA AND GAINED 15 LBS. STOPPED LYRICA. I AM ALLERGIC TO STEROIDS, COTISONE, IBUPROFIN, INSAIDS, TOREDAL AND TRAMADOL. IVE HAD MORE INCONTINENCE WITH PAIN OF SCIATICA. THE PAIN MEDICINE DOES NOT ALEVIATE WITH OXYCONTIN REDUCTION. WHY CAN I GET NO RELIEF? SECOND OPINION? I AM 61 AND THIS HAS CHANGED MY LIFE. HELP ME.
It doesn't matter what narcotic analgesic you're taking for whatever reason. You will become chemically dependent if you take it long enough. It doesn't matter how much pain you're in. Your body becomes accustom to any outside chemical that you put into your body for a period of time. When said chemical is abruptly stopped you will withdrawal because your body has become chemically dependent. This is straight from my board certified pain management doctor. My doctor said he has never heard of anyone in 30+years of practice that is immune to the effects of chemical dependency. He also said that some ER/CR type of narcotic analgesics can cause serious life threatening withdrawals if you're on a big dose and just abruptly stop taking it without stepping down the dosage. I know the package insert on my 80mg oxycontin pills have this type of warning too.
Hi I'm the person up there registered as willchill. I've read through these comments and the confusion I see people having with the wording and terminology. Most of you are correct, but I'd like to emphasize a couple of things. Oh, RN,MS, from UCSF CNS x30 years @ Critical Care bedside and instructor.here.. I put my credentials there and if you can figure out what the letters all mean then maybe you aren't on the right pain med.. OK that was a joke but the credentials are true.,, now I'm a chronic pain patient due to peripheral neuropathy. Ok here's the quick deal on what everybody is discussing.
True: If you take your pain meds exactly as prescribed, and it is indeed for pain, there is a very low chance of becoming addicted. It's documented in science journals so no need to argue. Terminology: Addiction vs Tolerance. True, taking pain medications the body develops a tolerance and when you decrease the dosage you will feel with- drawal. This is not the same as addiction. Addiction is the bad word that nobody wants. Look up the definition I don't need to write it here. Addiction is when the medication dictates your behavior and thoughts concerning how much you think you need, ie: is X stronger than Y?, If I take this X combo is it longer acting ?etc. and so on. People don't believe me but narcotics make me feel sick and I've only had sort of a good feeling from it the first time I had to take some as a kid. After that, thankfully I've never wanted narcotics and have never felt a buzz or high. All I feel is sick and sleepy. again I'me very lucky, but all of this talk is what generally what addicts are thinking about. They want to get that first time euphoria again. It makes a huge impression on people and that's why MD's must stop handing out for sore throats and headaches and muscle aches. It sets up the addict mind early in life to seek it for the rest of their lives. Non addict people taking pain meds for pain aren't concerned if X is stronger than Y. They just want relief from what the MD wrote for them. They don't get into the pharmacopia and look up chemical structures and which is more potent. This is addict thinking. Thinking that messes up how you live and progressively and chronically relapses and worsens and ends in one of three ways if an intervention is not done. Death, Institutions , and Jail. A non addicted chronic pain patient isn't counting pills or worrying about running out too soon. None of that. The addict sets up themselves for these problems by testing out combinations and timing them and all sorts of manipulations. The non addict or person at lowest risk to become an addict just takes the pills as ordered and doesn't need to come to forums like this to get the inside dope so to speak. Granted,a bit of a generalization, and there is normal overlap, with all mixes of behavior that do not make a person an addict. Many of the side effects and needs/beliefs of the pain medication and the power of the pain is all in your mind. Seriously, it is the brain that gives you the awareness that you have pain not the original injury or tissue that started it all. All those nerves did was send out a dreaded alarm that if the brain doesn't do something quick--tissue damage will occur. Chronic pain is a repeat movie and most of the time the origin of pain is not active any more. How do we know this? Phantom limb pain and placebo. I can't write a book here so you'll have to research this if you don't believe me. Chronic need of a pain med however, can mimic addiction and really I think the best way to think of addiction and tolerance is to ask yourself these questions with the most honest answer possible. Is my pain med controlling me? or am I controlling the pain med? Sure it crosses over a bit, but if you sit down, take a deep breath and ask your self this question and can have the guts to reply honestly then you have more information about your use of this narcotic than you had before. Unfortunately addiction is primarily genetic based in terms of susceptibility. It has nothing to do with morals or strong will or any of that stuff. It is a disease that takes control of ones life. but if we take these meds as ordered and not get into the craziness of which one is stronger (that is for the MD to know) your chances of having this environmental trigger to your genetic pre disposition for addiction stays low. We all range from little risk to very high risk of addiction when exposed to these products. Being educated and wary and smart goes a long way in preventing addiction, but I believe at some point in a genetically predisposed person to addiction life-.regardless, they will have to face this defect and will triumph or fail. or, if never exposed to the environmental triggers of addiction (almost impossible thinking of what we can get addicted to) will go through life unscathed. Again it has more to do with luck of the draw than moral character or will. Good luck to all..
