My friend was put on morphine for severe pain 5 months ago but she can get it on a repeat and is now better, is this normal practice?

It really depends on the laws where you live and the practices of the doctor involved.
For instance, in the U.S. and Canada, no, you'd have to see your doctor at least once a month and get a new prescription each time.
However, this does not apply everywhere.
