I am on a course of methotrexate. Is this drug a steroid and would it stop me from losing weight and my metabolism moving?

I am on intrathecal methotrexate every six weeks. I use to get sick and weak. My DR told me to go to a drug store and buy over the counter SAM-e. And wow wow it works. Good luck

I have read a number of the postings and sympathise with anyone having Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Dealing with the pain is the main issue. I have been on tablets in some shape or form for 20 years. I started playing football for a team called Fat Dads 10 years ago. Best thing I've done. It is painful sometimes but I never use that as an excuse not to play. Playing helps my metabolism and circulation to distribute the tablets, which in turn makes them more effective. Like all of us suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis you have good and bad days. I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago and still managed 90 minutes on the pitch last night, not ready for walking football yet.

I have been told by my potential new insurers that Methotrexate is a steroid, is this right? Don't want to accused of having an unfair advantage on the football pitch.

I take 7 tablets every week and folic acid every day except the day i take the methotrexate and I cannot seem to lose weight. Is weight gain normal? I would liek to say it is under control but although the red blotches may reduce in size they never completely go away only move around my body.

Hi I am on 10mg once weekly and taking 800mcg folic daily, I am on my 8th week of taking methotrexate, I am doing better, less weakness in lower torso and can move my arm above my head, i can now get up from a sitting position, which believe me was impossible. after first couple doses the side affects arent really bad anymore, i was on prednizone before 60mg daily which they tapered me of quckly due to bone pain. I noticed with the predinizone my hair became very brittle and broke off and some just fell out al around the top area, got very thin and I have some bald spots around my ears and behind. I dont think the methotrexate at low dose with the folic taken every day will cause hair loss, im noticing that my hair is growing slowly back now that I am off the prednizone. Good luck to you, this disease is no fun.. But it can get better.

I'm on 10mg of methotrexate once weekly for dermomyostitis , so far I've noticed mostly extreme fatigue after taking second dose. I am now on forth week of taking it I did have nausea first two times but with taking folic acid 800mcg everyday an other vitamins an also put on 50000 units vitamin D once weekly. I'm able to now walk an move better an less pain an overall weakness especially in lower torso I just want to know if there is anymore side affects I can expect I heard on low dose you probably won't loose hair with taking folic?

No, it is not a steroid, it is an antimetabolite and antifolate drug.

The most common side effects are nausea, dizziness, low white cell count and abdominal pain.
