Please i need to know for sure if gabapentin is a narcotic? I take them every day. I was prescribed them. I was told that they are and i wanna know for certain as im not wanting to take them no more.
This is from dea.gov website:
"Schedule V drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with lower potential for abuse than Schedule IV and consist of preparations containing limited quantities of certain narcotics. Schedule V drugs are generally used for antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic purposes."
They are finding that gabapentin/neurontin has potential for misuse or abuse as it can increase the high felt with opioids, benzos and psychoactive meds.
Gabapentin is not currently considered a narcotic or controlled substance by the federal government, but certain states have enacted legislation that it is treated as one or monitored by the state’s prescription drug monitoring program.
I am just assuming KY is one of those states.
Re: Psl772 (# 39)
FYI - I have been taking gabapentin for more than 10 years as a anticonvulsant and pain. Take it from someone who knows, gabapentin can and will make you very high and possibly to the point of nodding off.
Re: FireBlasterdz (# 16)
Lyrica is very much like gabapentin but it is not a generic of gabapentin. It is a totally different drug. For many people lyrica works better for pain and others prefer gabapentin. I take 800 mg of gabapentin 3x a day with hydromorphone every 3 hours and is "ok" but Lyrica made me very high and unable to function. Good luck to you with the Lyrica.
Re: lis (# 5)
I am in severe pain and I take gabapentin, doesn't work for severe pain
Re: joe (# 4)
Yes its used in patients with RSD/CRPS. I have taken this drug for 14yrs. I am cutting it bck to get off of it. It causes memory issues, weight gain. Plus other side effects. I was taking 2400mg. I am now taking 400mg in AM and 400mg in pm. I have noticed a big change since cutting it bck. Ideally. I want off this med altogether.
Re: Awakened36 (# 11)
I only take quarter of a 600mg. Gabapentin and I nod out, think I’m speaking and I’m not! I’m super sensitive to meds. Oh, and I also take 7.50/300mg of lortab, but this is only at bedtime for restless legs!
Then dont take them they should be called the gabastupid pill

Re: RN in virginia (# 23)
The generic name for Lyrica is pregabalin but it is not available at this time
Re: missy (# 18)
Kentucky is making gabapentin a controlled substance since people are abusing it.
Gabapentin is not a narcotic. But it may soon be a controlled substance. I work in a pharmacy and we treat it as a controlled medication and will not fill it until 90% has been used. It is frequently abused as it can give users a high from it. Just another thing for people with pain to have to jump through hoops to get any relief. Wish every single person that runs the government, FDA, and CDC could live with chronic pain day in and day out for a week so they can understand what we suffer with from chronic pain issues and then see if they will be so eager to make it impossible for us to get the meds we need in order to live and function day to day!
Re: RN in virginia (# 23)
RN please be kind, this person was told correctly that in his state Gabapentin is scheduled. To most people when they think the word "scheduled" they think "narcotic". That is a misunderstanding of what makes a medication scheduled. That doesn't make it wrong or spreading misinformation. Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia Gabapentin is a scheduled 5 medication. Mass and Oklahoma are in the works of scheduling it. Other states are moving in that direction. Gabapentin is not federally scheduled yet. Gabapentin is staged to be a class c scheduled medication and they are voting on storage and asking for public opinion as we speak. Research what schedule 5 means for your state. It's the lowest schedule there is. It usually means a limit in the number of refills on a bottle and no early refills if lost or stolen. It usually meant the scripts are being monitored. Different states may have a few differences between them.
Re: Amc (# 55)
It's not a narcotic, look up the definition of a narcotic. Google it.
I am taking pregator daily 2times a day.It is PRESCRIBED for lumber stenosis and sciatica. Is it alright.? Will it help to cure.?
Re: Vickki1000 (# 37)
Responded to Vickis comment. Lyrica is a class 2. It has been for years.
Re: Vickki1000 (# 51)
Doctors are prescribing it for pain instead of real pain medication, so don't be fooled. Take 300mg of Gabapentin and see how well it works for pain then take 2 30mg Oxycodone and see which one works better. Believe me Oxycodone will work 1000X better for pain, without any side affects. Common sense people
Re: Kelly (# 41)
Schedule 5 narcotic to be exact...your wrong...as of July 1st it became one... Do your research b4 speaking on a subject. misleading advice like yours can kill someone or get them arrested......ignorance is no excuse for not taking time to make sure what you're saying is a fact... too many ppl like you speak in matters u know nothing of... LOOK IT UP. GOOGLE DEA AND GABBAPENTIN.
No it is not.it helps with nerve damage only, its not a pain med or anything like that. Some people feel a little groggy when they take it and others don't. But it's not considered a narcotic. Just be careful when takin until you know how your body reacts to it.
Re: Kristyne (# 49)
I know right! I'm not a woman and I can tell it would totally be wrong to prescribe that for menopause. I'm glad to see people responding that are educated and intelligent. Have a good day.
