Is Chantix Safe For People With Depression?

I'm getting terrified after reading some Chantix horror stories and people who report never being the same after taking it. I just took my first dose of Chantix.

Leading up to the decision to try it, I've been severely depressed for the past 3-4 months and recently began thinking that if I can just quit smoking I'll be healthier, able to exercise, date (not too many smoker lovers out there) and generally feel better. I now wonder if I'm better off smoking. I'm 32 (female if it matters) & already think that my seratonin levels/receptors are screwed up thanks to years of anti depressants (sertraline, generic for Zoloft). Tried going off that one several months ago and felt great at first then eventually crashed into deep depression. Started taking them (Zoloft) again and still haven't quite recovered. I'm scared that adding Chantix to the mix is a big mistake. My doctor seemed very nonchalant about prescribing it - saying it doesn't interact with Zoloft or Buprenorphine (which I'm also on at a low dose).

My fear is that all these meds could permanently alter my brain chemistry. Can someone with a history of depression and Chantix experience please chime in to help me weigh the pros & cons? I would be so grateful.

I don't know if it matters but I've been clean/sober from alcohol & drugs for 9 years, so nothing other than doctor prescribed poisons (ha) which I'm starting to think may be worse. I'm wondering if I should just not take the Chantix and dodge a bullet there.

The FDA does include a warning with Chantix about possible behavioral and mood changes occurring due to taking it.

Other side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and insomnia.

It has worked very well for some people that tried it, but not for all.

Have you started taking it, yet? If you decide to do so, you should make sure to keep all upcoming doctor's appointments, so they can monitor you, and seek help immediately, if you begin to feel severe depression symptoms, such as suicidal ideation.
