Is Aplenzin (bupropion Hydrobromide) Er A Narcotic? (Top voted first)
UpdatedMy mother brought to my attention that anything with the word "hydro" in any medication could be a narcotic. I have a family history of drug abusers and don't want to follow in their steps so I would appriciate it if someone could answer this clearly as possible for me. Thank you for your time.

Hi Ghost - to answer your question, no, Bupropion Hydrobromide is not a narcotic. It is an antidepressant (in a different class of drugs). The term "Hydro" in this case is from chemistry and refers to a chemical compound of this medication.
Wikipedia states "In chemistry, a hydrobromide is an acid salt resulting, or regarded as resulting, from the reaction of hydrobromic acid with an organic base (e.g. an amine). The compounds are similar to hydrochlorides."
I imagine that your mother is thinking of the drug "Hydrocodone", which although it starts with "Hydro", is in a different class of drugs altogether. It is actually pretty common for drugs to contain hydrochloride or hydrobromide compounds without being a narcotic.
I hope this helps to clear some things up and please let me know if you have any other questions about this.
What is Bupropion hcl xl (300mg) manufactured by Actavis?
It's a white oval-shaped pill with the number 142 on one side and nothing on the other side. Is it addictive? Also, is it a narcotic?
@Truly - Bupropion is NOT a narcotic or opiate pain killer. It is in a different class of drugs altogether and is not known to be addictive or habit forming.
"Bupropion is a medication primarily used as an antidepressant and smoking cessation aid. It is marketed as Wellbutrin and Zyban among other trade names. It is one of the most frequently prescribed antidepressants in the United States and Canada, although in many countries this is an off-label use. It is an effective antidepressant on its own, but is also popular as an add-on medication in cases of incomplete response to first-line SSRI antidepressants. Bupropion is taken in tablet form and is available only by prescription in most countries." [1]
