Information Regarding Side Effects After Morphine Stopped.
UpdatedHello anyone. I was on Morphine for maybe 5 months after two years of a chronic pain condition. The analgesic effects were very short lived and the negative effects high. I was very physically (not so much psychologically) dependant and came off as soon as I could. I think my dose was 15/20 ml every 4 hours of liquid (Oramorph) but to be honest, I really don't remember. I have been off completely for a month and a half. I am 40. I went on the drug fully informed and mentally prepared but was severely shocked by the travail of coming off. I have no desire to return to it and would rather take the pain than loss of self. Which is really saying something.
Now - my mind is so woolly. I can't seem to think or hold anything in my head. My memory is ridiculously poor. I do and say illogical things which are completely out of character. I make idiotic, impulsive decisions that are very worrying. This was all very, very bad whilst I was taking the drug, and I/ my family expected it and worked round it, but surely it should be gone by now? Does anyone have any similar experience or comments?

How long have you been off of it?
I really have to say...been there, done that! I completely understand what you're talking about. I was on high doses of Morphine for several years for pain management and there were many effects, such as depression that I never even attributed to it.
The good news is that if you follow what happened to me, things will get better, but it will take time. It took about 4 to 5 months for me, until my though processes returned completely to normal.
Learn more Morphine details here.
These medications have an effect on brain chemicals, just like antidepressants and benzodiazepines, so it can take a good while for your body to balance itself back out.
You weren't taking it as long as I was, so hopefully it won't take as long for you. But the best advice I can give in the meantime is to leave yourself notes to remind yourself to do stuff you need to and force yourself to stop and think twice, before you let anything come out of your mouth. Do the same thing for decisions, leave yourself notes about them if you have to, just don't make them if you can avoid it, or make yourself write down details, before you decide, to give yourself some extra thinking before you do it.
It's tough, but hang in there and if it doesn't start improving after a month or two, then seek medical help.
Do you have any questions? I'll be happy to check back and answer if I can! :-)
