Increase In Morphine

My mom has chronic pain due to her low back. Has been on Morphine 15 mg SR for at least 15 years also Percocet 5mg for break thru pain. Last appt. with MD we explained that 15 mg was not covering her pain. I asked to bump her up to 20 mg (I am an RN) but was told that is not how it goes and was given a RX for Morphine 30 mg q 12 hours. She was on q 12 hours prior. Mom is sleeping 90 percent of the time. Has no real need for Percs anymore. Wondering if this sleeping all the time after getting adjusted to dose soon. Thank You for helping me. She is questioning if it is wort it since she has NO quality of life anymore because she is sleeping so much. Thank You for you insight.

Morphine is actually notorious for causing excessive drowsiness in some people that take it, there are quite a few studies listed in the NIH database about it. I experienced it myself, and no, it did not go away, until I stopped taking it.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and dry mouth.

Did they say why they feel it doesn't 'work that way'?

Most doctors prefer to do incremental increases, to leave somewhere for the patient to go in the future.
