I'm Breaking Out In Hives

Updated February 28, 2018

I'm taking losartan 100mg and atorvastatin 80 mg. I also take 45 units of Humalog, 80 units of Levemir, 500 mg metformin, carvedilol once a day, bumetanide and amlodipine 10 mg. I took all this for a long time. I started breaking out with about 200 hives all over my legs and side of my body. Can you please tell me what it could be? I had to quit taking all my medication except my sugar shot and I started adding one pill at a time. As soon as I got to that amlodipine and I took 70 units of my leveremir the next morning I broke out all over, so I quit and just took two 45 unit doses and I was okay. Can someone help me please? Thank you.

Hi Tony,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Because you're taking so many medications it may be challenging to determine exactly which ones are the culprit. However, it sounds like you could've narrowed it down to Amlodipine and Leveremir, is this correct? Has the rash gotten any better since the timing of your post? Perhaps it's just a matter of determining which ones are the culprits through trial and error (e.g. waiting to see how you respond after each dose), & then working closely with your doctor to find suitable alternatives?

Just for the record, NIH.gov lists "hives" as an allergic reaction to most medications, including Amlodipine at:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMHT0008948

Hope this helps!
