In the U.S. every manufacturer of a medication is required to use a unique imprint code on every dosage of a medication, to enable its identification, in case of an emergency. These codes must be logged with the FDA and by looking up the code, one must be able to discover who the manufacturer is, the active ingredient(s) and the amount of them.

When a medication, such as Percocet, is available as a generic, it can be made by multiple manufacturers, thus, there will be multiple imprint codes.

Not all companies use a logo, but in the cases you mentioned, the IP stands for IntraPharm Laboratories and the M stands for Mallinckrodt pharmaceuticals. So, it is just designating that they have been made by different companies.

Before these imprints were required, if someone overdosed on a tablet, or had a bad reaction, and there was no identifying label found for them, then emergency personnel had no way of knowing what it was that they took and this lack of information could delay proper treatment. The same could happen if the person had a bad reaction to a medication or if the medication was adulterated and caused problems.

Thanks to the imprints, emergency personnel can use references, just like we do, to look up a pill and identify it.

Even if the medication is the same dosage as prior ones that you received, it will still have a different imprint, if it was manufactured by a different company.

Are there any other questions?
