I Stopped Taking Synthroid And Ended Up In A Coma (Top voted first)

I moved from NC to CA a few months ago. I ran out of Synthroid (200 mcgs daily) and because I had moved out here due to a 28 year old son with a
brain tumor my only concern was his well being. After 2 months without the med I could barely stay awake for more than 4 hours at a time. My hair feel out in clumps and I retained huge amounts of fluid. I barely urinated and became confused. Next thing I knew it was two weeks later on I was on a ventilator. I nearly died. I am a nurse...I knew better. Please, please, please....if your MD prescribes Synthroid after obtaining the proper labs take it AS ORDERED. It is cheap but if you can not afford it just tell your MD.,,,,,,sunworship

Thank you so much. For the Info. I was thinking to stop the medication because since I started it I gain 12 pounds in 9 months.

The cautions mentioned above are especially important if you have to rely on Levothyroxine as a means of thyroid replacement. I know someone who had actually their thyroid removed due to cancer and if she were to stop taking it abruptly she could very well not be alive. It's just one those types of medications you have to learn how to integrate into your everyday lifestyle in order to maintain proper hormonal balance.

But if you're just taking it for thyroid support (& not as a means of replacement hormones) and you do have intentions to quit, it may be best to talk with your Dr. first about weaning down gradually so as to not put your body into a state of shock.
