I Stopped Taking Omeprazole After A 1 1/2 Years

I am a 56 year old woman that was giving omeprozole for acid reflux and gerd. It really did help. I thought it was the best thing ever until here 1 1/2 years later, the Dr was sending me to a heart specialist because my heart rate has climbed so high as well as my blood pressure. I've also had incontinence this year that has made my life miserable. Little did I know until reading more about the omeprazole that all of these problems had come from taking it. I stopped the omeprazole and with in days my heart rate begin to come down, from 123 beats per minute to 87 bpm. My blood pressure also dropped into a normal range, and the best thing is no more incontinence. I didn't realize this medication was causing all of this mess. My Dr. tried to say it wasn't the omeprazole, but then turned and said, that is not a good medicine to take that I should only take as needed. She had me on it once a day, for the past 1 1/2 now she says this.My husband who is 60, has also been on it for quite some time. He was ready to have a heart ablation because of so many palpitations, I told him I read omeprazole, can cause palpitations and arrhythmia's. He stopped taking it every day, and now only takes it when he has to, and he is not having the heart episodes he had before. I'm so upset that we have been on this and didn't realize what its been doing to us.

Hello, Terry! How are you and your husband doing? I'm very sorry about the problems you experienced.

They aren't common side effects, but the FDA does list everything you've described as being possible effects of taking this medication. It may also cause vertigo, hypoglycemia, depression, impotence and there is a risk of hip fractures, especially with long-term use in the elderly.

It's really not intended to be taken long-term, usually it should only be prescribed for up to 4 months.

I've heard of more doctors prescribing it long-term and I find that greatly concerning.
