I Started The Fentanyl Patch 100 Today After 3 Years Of Oxycontin, The Last Dose Of Oxy Was 80op 4 Times Per 24 Hours. How Does The Patch Fair?
UpdatedHello, friends! I started the Fentanyl patch 100mc today after OxyContin treatment my highest dose was 80OP up to 4 per 24 hours. I suffer from agonizing chronic pain due to severe nerve damage in my feet (medical neglect and misdiagnosed 3 years ago). I've build up opioid tolerance pretty quickly, so my doctor suggested the Fentanyl patches, plus, I felt "victimized by the system" - all and everyone plays the "Cops", lecturing me about the risks of opioids, treating me like a "junkie". Nothing against those that use these meds recreationally, but because of those very people, I will convulse in ER, and the attending doctor will insist on reaching my neurologist first before administering the pain relief... Finally, my doctor suggested these patches - I am MORTIFIED after reading about deaths, OD accidents, etc. Please, someone, is this patch really so dangerous??? I do have a very high tolerance for opioids based medication, and this patch I had now for 6 hours, I can almost tell when I get the "release" - it does help my pain, for sure. I am a bit drowsy, but other than that I can't really complain. I guess I am trying to reach out and ask the "pros" - how does this Fentanyl 100mch do compare to OxyContin 80OP at about 4-5 per 24 hours??? What should I look out for??? Should I ask a friend to "watch me" overnight in fear I may stop breathing??? Guys, I'm so paranoid now (it does work, though...I think), but I'm afraid to go to bed with this patch, after reading so many horrible, sad stories about people dying from a small amount of gel they chewed... I'm not intending at all to misuse it, my doctor prescribed it with confidence, I am just scared... honestly,,,, Anyone???

Hello, kSasha! How are you?
I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner, how did it go with the patch?
If you are opiate tolerant, there is likely no real reason for you to be so afraid. The risks are much greater for those that aren't, or who abuse it, since it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine. That's why it's dosed in micrograms, unlike most other medications… and that's also why people that chewed them overdosed, it's very, VERY potent.
As to your concerns, what you should watch for would be any signs of severe central nervous system depression, such as shallow breathing, extreme dizziness and drowsiness.
Been on the patch 100for 15 yrs. works great no problems if used CORRECTLY. But because of people mid using the patch it gets a bad rep and now after 15 yrs of use my dr totally stopped writing that along with my oxy 45 mg for break through pain stating the government is coming down on her for me being in the so called red of there so called chart. Best if luck I hope this doesn't happen to you. But be aware that it can as I am now totally at a loss
Hello DJ,
I am in similar situation as you, been in Pain Management for over 10 years, and I've become very tolerant of Opiates, etc...Morphine, Dilaudid, Fentanyl....all of them, even anasthesia.....so it becomes very hard for me when I have to get procedures done in Hospital, and the Dr. or ER Dr. etc....give me the normal dose of IV Pain medicine, and it really doesn't do anything, and I have to wait 3-4 hours for the next average dose, again barely doing a thing.....only a few Dr's or Anasthesiologists have Dr's give me Higher Dosage to control my pain. What State are you in DJ?? And do you know if the so called "Red Zone" or Flag supposedly by the FDA is different from state to state?? I really don't like my Pain Dr., and it's not just me, he has a very lousy reputation when it comes to Patient Interaction, and Care for Patients.....He is the one that worked my Dosage up so High, and the minute something happens, in an emergency, he would never try to help out, he'd just as soon watch you suffer with no medication, and nearly die in withdraw.....he sometimes has suddenly cut me, or switched my meds, and put me into withdraws, and then he will lie and say that the FDA made a sudden change.....but I check with my Pharmacist, who is up on everything, as he owns a big pharmacy, and has to be....and he'll tell me the Dr. is lying, and possibly covering his own tracks, etc.......
Sorry to say I must be very much like you are too as I found that patch worthless. When I have surgery, I ask for and receive 55 mg of Demerol which is from a different family and they also throw in Tramdol or Tramedol for inflammation. That takes care of day 1, then I am able to switch over to Oxycontin for 10 days and do fine without any. Hopes this helps you some for your next surgery. My new orthopedic surgeon wasn't sure he could still get Demerol and I told him I was sure he could in a hospital setting or I was not showing up for surgery. It has yet to be cancelled.
I have been using the patch for 8 yrs. Starting with 25 micrograms now for past 3 years 100 & 25's 2 patches plus
Oxocodon 10/325 4Xday . Then Heart meds and ambien for sleep. I am still alive but it can damage your liver and other problems. You must depend on your Dr.s advice to the letter and be careful. I hope l have helped you.
Problem with patches for me isn't the fear of an OD it was finding out how they work compared to the tablets I was taking before. They did great. Then I went to Texas to visit and sweat it off. So I switched to putting a tagaderm patch over it. I would say if you were taking the big boy tablet that it's not to big of a worry for OD. "IF TAKEN THE WAY THEY ARE PRESCRIBED. " I switched over without a problem. Now for my back pain I'm going to a stimulator. Then just a small breakthrough med.
