I Nearly Died From An Intravenous Procain Penicillin Shot

I had a throat infection and chest infection coming on and because I'm travelling I always take some procain penicillin shots with me as they help me recover quickly and faster than the orals. I've used them for about 15 years when I needed to. But this time is life changing and no one understands. I'm hoping there is someone this happened to, to talk to. As soon as I had the shot which was administered into my upper bottom hip area (same spots for years) as soon as pin out I had a rush of blood go through my body to my head, then a ringing sensation in my ears, then felt dizzy and lost all orientation, followed by very very fast heart beats and then loss of breathing. I fell backwards on the bed and started yelling "get me help, I'm dying!" Then I felt like I was about to die as I couldn't breath and my heart was out of control. I felt like I was about to fall asleep and I couldn't let this happen cause I knew I would die. So I started breathing really deep breaths in my nose out of my mouth to try to keep myself awake and control my heart beat before I passed out and knew I was dead. After 5 minutes I felt I was getting control back. My eyes were popping out of my head and I made it into a car to get to an emergency hospital.

On the way my heart was beating out of control and I was waiting for it to stop, but I couldn't breath. I made it to the hospital and no one would believe me. It went straight into my blood stream and I needed help and saying it's allergic reaction and I knew it wasn't. No rash, no hives, no swelling, no nothing. I knew this cause every shot I've had hurts and causes a stinging sensation in the muscle and this time I felt nothing at all and knew something was wrong. It felt different and then all the symptoms came and I cheated death. I never have drawn back a needle to check if it hit a vein, as I didn't know this. So all these years I got lucky and this time nearly killed me. If there is anyone else out there that this happened to, it would be great to hear from you, as I lived to share my story as I should not be ALIVE and want others in the medical field to understand this is fatal and I'm here to help to explain to why people have died from this when they are not allergic to it and how lethal it is when it's administered intravenously and not intramuscular. Dr's here in Dubai are not understanding this so I need to share with the world and hope there is a medical professional that understands this, as I don't feel right in the head after this traumatic experience.

It has been known to cause such side effects via IV, and that is normal according to the NIH.

While I understand your fear and concern, since any such issues are terrifying and put us in fear of our lives, it is really not anything unusual. I don't mean to minimize your experience, I've had bad reactions myself, but it is most likely that you experiencing more side effects and experienced them fast, since it was injected IV, rather than in the muscle, thus it was probably absorbed faster in your body.

I had the same thing happen, when I was given Benadryl via IV, once in the ER, due to an allergic reaction. The worst I've ever experiencing from it before was drowsiness, but having it dosed that way really had some strange effects, including lowered blood pressure, and my feeling as high as a kite.

Then again, I am not a doctor, so I really can't speak as to what happened to you. Have you considered consulting an ENT or an allergist? Are you on any other medications?
