I Drop 8lbs In One Week!!!!!

I have been taking levothyroxine 50mcg for 1 week. I've being taking care of my self, watch what I eat and I try to walk every day 20 to 30 mint. My weight before I start levothyroxine was 138lbs and know I weight 130lbs in just one week! Is that ok?? or what do guys think?

Hi Blanca,

The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, and since Levothyroxine is used to treat an under active thyroid, it makes good sense that your metabolism and fat burning would rev up during the time that you're on this medication.

I would however question whether or not the pounds you are losing is really just water weight as opposed to fat cells? One way to know for sure would be to weigh yourself in the morning as well as in the evening. If your weight fluctuates it's likely that you lost water weight that eventually would need to be replenished.

If it is fat then that's great :) but I do find 8lbs in a week to be a bit too high to be "only" fat. Most individuals loose 1 pound of "fat" a week when dieting and exercising...and more over 5+ pounds of water weight during intense exercise. Water weight however, always needs to be replenished.
