I was given this prep to use for a colonoscopy (Prepopik). I always tell my doctors that I am allergic to sulfa and penicillin and I know they do not have the time to research all meds at the office visit. Several years ago, I was given Hydrodiuril which had hydrochlorothiazide in it. It was a dedicated nurse that found out why I had such a reaction to Hydrodiuril. I ended up in ICU for 3 days. I am afraid of taking any kind of new medication because of the preservatives, etc.

Hi Carmen,
I actually came across an interesting article about sufla and sulfite allergies that mentioned how "antibiotic-based" sulfonamides are reported to be structurally different from "non-antibiotic" sulfonamides. Concluding that "antibiotic-based" sulfonamides are much more likely to result in an allergic reaction than those taking "non-antibiotic" sulfonamides.
With that said, it sounds like the risk is still going to be there despite your lesser odds of having a reaction to it, like you did with hydrochlorothiazide. So I think a wise decision at this point would be to contact your doctor about trying another type of prep kit just to be on the safe side.
I try my best to watch every ingredient that goes into my body as well, and can understand how challenging it may be at times to find something that's both safe and effective; especially with the amount of fillers they use in medication. You did the right thing by checking first, but there are other types of laxatives out there (including natural options) that can also produce results.
