UpdatedHow Long Can You Be On This Prescription At A time i have been on three rounds for a boil on my butt. This last time it was for 15 days 2 pills a day and the boil came back again. The medicine makes me feel so bad is their anything else that i can take. the DR said that if the boil comes back that i will haft to take it up to 6 months is this necessary to be on this medicine for a long period of time. What will happen if i just let the boil come to head on its own instead of getting it lanced every time and going on the medicine.I NEED HELP PLEASE.

I'm taking this for a kidney infection but I get such vertigo and dizziness from it I can hardly concentrate at work. I eat before I take it but am wondering if I might be allergic to this medicine. My daughter says I look like I'm higher than a kite......
I was on this medication for a year for acne and now I am resistant to it and cant take it for other more serious things like ear infections and bladder infections because my body has built up a tolerance for it and it never got rid of the acne!! Now I have to take even more potant antibiotics for bladder infections and stuff like that because I took this medication for so long. Be careful taking an antibiotic for a long time because getting resistant to antibiotics is not a good thing. As for the boil, I get those from time to time and I lance them myself, and let them drain a bit and then use peroxide to clean out the hole the boil made and then put an antibiotic ointment like bacitacin on it and cover it with a thick gause pad and tape and repeat that process the next day, then I just use the ointment on it daily and it heals and goes away within a week or so. If u can lance it yourself or have someone do it for u make sure to clean it out well with the peroxide, u can put a Qtip in the peroxide and get it inside the lanced opening. If u want to get it to come to a head on its own, put a hot wash cloth on it a few times a day or get "boil ease" at the pharmacy and that will bring it to a head and pop, then do the peroxide. The peroxide seems to be the key to getting it to go away, that's what I have learned over the years anyway.
The usual oral adult dosage for Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole 160 mg-800 mg (1 double-strength tablet) is every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days.
I personally have not heard of anyone needing to take this specific antibiotic for any length of time outside of 2 weeks, so that part has me a bit puzzled; especially taking into consideration the severity of side effects that come packaged with it.
The good news is there are much safer options out there. I would highly recommend looking into natural approaches, such as using certain essential oils on the boil. If you think your boil was diet related, then I'd also suggest incorporating more fruits and veggies in replace of a few of your meals. These foods have natural antibacterial properties that can make a difference internally.
I hope this helps!
